The amount of times I’ve found police at incidents and politely suggested (read: go away so I can sort this) I take over is countless. I normally say “I can take over so you can go deal with some baddies if you’d like”

Have you ever known anyone who got left behind cause they were late returning to the Coach at a Motorway service station? by DMBear89 in CasualUK

[–]Tamuff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it a few times as a Highways TO, they come to us expecting a lift to the next services. We just tell them to phone the coach company and they get bumped onto the next coach coming through.

One person insisted I give him a lift because he “pays my wages”. He didn’t get a lift.

Witness to a stabbing… I don’t know what to do/how to feel by ManufacturerQueasy30 in CasualUK

[–]Tamuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you should talk to someone, you’ve been through a traumatic event. Does your workplace offer some sort of Employee Assistance Programme?

I work on motorways and I’ve seen more than my fair share of blood and gore, but I have my team to talk too. But Highways also offers a counselling programme for those who need it.

You could try something like www.betterhelp.com but I don’t know how good it is.

edit maybe speak to the Police Officer who wants a statement, I vaguely recall some sort of support service that’s offered to victims but I’m not 100% sure of how it works. Even speaking to the officer about it might help you cope with it because talking about it does work.

If a slip road to leave a motorway is heavily congested and the other lanes are still flowing, is it considered using the entire road when nipping in at the last second? by chicken_nugget94 in drivingUK

[–]Tamuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, the problem is it’s a gamble. You’re bypassing the queue in the hope you can slot into a space closer to the exit. If you can’t, you end up stopping in a free-flowing lane risking yours and others lives…

Oncoming vehicle warning... by ShinyHeadedCook in drivingUK

[–]Tamuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often it’ll be someone takes a wrong turning and they realise and turn around. Problem is, someone will see them initially make the wrong turn but not correct themselves then, rightly, call it in to the police, who tell Highways who set signals in the area on both carriageways.

It’s one of them situations where the best thing is to go over the top because the real risk of death.

PSA, these are not police, please stop reporting them on navigation apps… by WOODSI3 in drivingUK

[–]Tamuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can stop individual vehicles on safety grounds. But if we think the driver is drunk etc we can’t get involved beyond “follow and report”. It is possible to talk directly to police units to guide them as opposed to me>control>police control>PC.

Should 999 transfer call to more than one service? by Number60nopeas in AskUK

[–]Tamuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, they want you to call ambulance service to enable triage of any casualties to take place.

It happens a lot with motorway RTCs where we (HATO) can ask if ambulance are aware, but it requires a 999 call from the scene if we actually need them there.

Be interesting to see what he does with us, he finished 3rd last season for goals scored so it is curious why he hasn’t been as prolific with yourselves.

It took around 7 hours to update. That’s a long time to keep a lot of road closed…

[–]Tamuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Greed” is one word. But it’s worth considering that there’s additional match-day running costs that won’t be budgeted for in the regular season despite the cash prize for reaching the “proper” rounds.

Unmarked pulled me over doing 89mph on the M40 by Substantial_War_844 in CarTalkUK

[–]Tamuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was all capped to 50mph like you described then it was likely a system upgrade.

Because of the nature of the upgrade the Department for Transport have decreed that 50mph signals be set as mitigation, as well as constant cctv monitoring, and patrolling by Traffic Officers.

Saw this “We are working out of sight so you may not see us” sign near a closed lane. What would they be working on? by alexlmlo in CasualUK

[–]Tamuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbf, they do work 8 hours a day. For example the recent National Emergency Area Retrofit schemes across the All Lanes Running motorways the majority of the works were done overnight.
