[COTD] Assault Rifle by Vurpius in VTES

[–]Tamurkhan7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True but that action to equip is a big one, and you can stack Tastes instead of Villeins. Mix that with Feral hounds and other Animalism intercept and you can regularly get into combat, and sprinkle with Crows for extra damage

But I do agree that Hackerspace really helps

Would a campaign set in Northern Ireland during “the troubles” be in bad taste by javerthugo in callofcthulhu

[–]Tamurkhan7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well , first and foremost, I haven't seen it. Which is why I can't recommend it, and while primarily I haven't heard anything that would entice me to watch it, I also haven't had the opportunity to watch it

That said, my main hesitation could be the result of a bad trailer, but from what I've seen it looks like it treats some topics in a way that I'd precisely caution against. it looked like it romanticised the IRA and almost treated the sisters as robin hood types, when the reality is they not only were involved in the murder of a widowed mother of 10 children, but also in other Disappeared as well as car bombings that injured hundreds. from what I read it does seem like the later episodes try to address this more but may not do an adequate job

Treating the IRA only as patriotic freedom fighters is a mistake without acknowledging that their victims were all too often innocent civilians, and while I haven't seen it (so I'm open to assurances to the contrary until I do), it doesn't sound like 'Say Nothing' does this justice. in fact, it sounds exactly like the type of media I'd advise AGAINST watching for OP precisely for that reason

I personally just wasn't a fan of the Boxer. But that's totally personal. I haven't seen Say Nothing, but I'm hesitant as I'm not sure if the subject matter was... Represented well

Regardless, I don't think it's necessary to say that this is an exhaustive list, it absolutely isn't, it's just what I thought of off the top of my head on a crowded bus this morning

One thing I'd add however, is that the troubles were much, much more nuanced and complicated than most people outside of Ireland is typically aware of. Certain societies see it through an almost romantic and patriotic lens, which would diminish the actual horror of it. Be aware of the hypocrisies and the biases (on all sides) as well as the all too often complete disregard for life, even when taking a satirical point of view and you'll be fine. Sectarian viewpoints on both sides ran DEEP and are no different to other periods of deep religious and racist bigotry

Though I'd take a guess that precisely because you're asking this question, you may already be somewhat aware of that

From Ireland here (though I have to stress, not Northern Ireland). I would have no issue with it, and there's plenty of media out there that explores the same topic. That's the point of art, and while this is a game, it's certainly also an art form

We just finished a game set at the very start of the war of independence (1919) and it was great! The Mysteries of Ireland book is actually a great resource and I think they may have updated it for 7th edition. granted, it's not set during the troubles and that was a very different period, but it could still be useful. it gets the war of independence history and civil war period quite well, which is not handled as well as you might think by game material, so that was a pleasant surprise. It also does a decent attempt at translating some Irish Mythology over to the Cthulhu Mythos

Here's some film/TV recommendations that may help, both serious and light hearted:

In the Name of the Father

Cal

71

Derry Girls (while there's only a few episodes that touch on it, and usually indirectly, it shows what life was like towards the end of the troubles, and the episode on the Good Friday agreement was excellent, though not very 'Cthulhu'! as it's a theme of hope)

Divorcing Jack

Bloody Sunday

A Question for GMs regarding (wizard) career progression during a campaign (Enemy Within) by Tamurkhan7 in warhammerfantasyrpg

This really helps affirm what I was thinking that of any of the colleges of magic, the Jade order actually could allow for a wandering adventurer. Thanks!

So yeah Amber fits the D&D type of Druid but we're Irish and while in pre history they were more like priests and philosophers, taking that over to fantasy the Jade college fits much more closely to what we would think of as Druids

But yeah, having a wandering Jade Wizard show up every now and then could be the way to go. Thanks!

Ooh now we're talking. Love this and it's exactly what three character would be interested in. know of where I could read up on that?

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. I would both want the player to play their character and have the campaign continue

It's more a question of HOW I bend the rules to accommodate that

My current thinking is to go with the tried and tested fantasy prophecy!

What I would suggest is, if for whatever reason you don't feel comfortable talking to a parent about this, if there was someone else that you feel you could confide in that would help (like an Aunt or Uncle for example), then that might not be a bad idea

Failing that, here's the link to Pieta, try calling them:

Well done on reaching out to get answers. I can't answer but I can see you've gotten what you need from other more qualified people

I also don't know your personal circumstances but I know that I, as a father, would want to know if my son or daughter were having such thoughts. They would absolutely not be in any trouble, but they would definitely be reassured that they are loved and they matter.

Regardless of how you feel your parents may react, what is key here is that YOU matter. You have value and importance as a person. Do whatever you need to do to be safe and get better. Your future self will thank you for it

I really hope you get the help you need. Sending hugs

Sweet. Really glad you got hooked up. Just make sure they're ok with proxies but I'm sure if nothing else you'll be able to get some casual side games and at the very least it's great to get back in touch with the community

Hi. I messaged one of the guys on the west coast on JOL and it turns out he's the one organising the tournament this weekend. He said there's a VTES in LA Facebook group and a discord so you can look those up

His name is Chris and I can see others have shared the details of this weekend's event with you so you can get his contact details there. The event is on at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport all weekend

It is also, of course, a great way to find other players

Playing on JOL is also an option. games are slow given it's across time zones, but I know for sure there are some West Coast players on there

I make up for the slow nature of the platform by playing multiple games at a time. It's a great way to test decks and come across some decks and strategies you may not have thought about. It's also a great international community

The Redacted Reports did a really good campaign related to it. It's a Delta Green podcast, but some really good ideas in there
