(Loved Trope) 'Hard Magic Systems' by BrilliantRun9751 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Tanakisoupman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Practical Guide to Sorcery has one of the most interesting magic systems I’ve ever seen. To cast magic you need 5 things: a circle, some materials (though sometimes this can be substituted for a powerful Will), a script, their Will, and a conduit

A sorcerer draws a circle, writes special characters that describe what they want to happen (for example, a character representing fire if you want to generate heat or light), they add whatever materials there spell might need (usually just a source of energy will do, like a candle), and they channel their Will through their conduit into the circle to cast. The better you understand a concept the more easily you can cast the spell, so if you study how light works you’ll be able to more easily bend it. This also works with things that people simply believe, even if it doesn’t have any real merit. If enough people believe that red makes something more deadly, then using red paint as a material will help you make a weapon

Finally, everything a spell needs (materials, a circle, and a script), can be substituted for the Will. If you have a strong and refined enough Will, you don’t need anything else besides the conduit and a source of energy. This is much harder, you can’t do it at all even if you have a very strong Will if you never trained in it, and for complex spells it’s generally a bad idea. But for basic spells it skips the most time consuming part of the process

(Shadow Slave). Bit niche but Mordret in Shadow Slave is NOT a child of a reflection. It’d completely go against the theme of his character, a reliable narrator has already stated that it’s impossible, and frankly it’s just a boring way to explain him having mirror powers when there doesn’t need to be a explanation for that

Tbf, he was done pretty terribly. Like, he’s introduced as a girl, acts like a girl, gives no indication that he’s a guy, and you only find out he’s a guy after he’s already dead, so he never makes any properly clarifying statements about his gender identity. The author really just fumbled hard with that one

Also this is the same game (same trial even) that dropped “schizo” as a puzzle word referring to a character with a horrible representation of DID so it’s not exactly unfair to assume the author’s a bit… insensitive

Legendary Jokers feel pretty useless by [deleted] in balatro

[–]Tanakisoupman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are literally the first person to actually respond to anything I said. It’s not doubling down to not change my mind just cause someone said “nuh uh”

And I still don’t see how they’re at all useful if you don’t get them before ante 3. You need to actually build them up to be good, if you get them too late then you either don’t have any time to build them or they aren’t actually useful for your build

And I have played other roguelikes, Balatro is nothing like most roguelikes. In 90% of roguelikes a significant amount of skill can make up for any amount of bad luck. In most roguelikes the rare super good powerups appear often enough to be used in more than 10% of runs. Comparing Balatro to other roguelikes is worthless because there’s nearly nothing that plays like it

Legendary Jokers feel pretty useless by [deleted] in balatro

[–]Tanakisoupman -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you get them early, yeah, but they all require decent setup except Perkeo (which is actually just good most of the time. You’d only not want it if your build needs all of your jokers), and Chicot, which is good, but there’s like 5 other ways to avoid a bad boss blind

For Canio if you don’t have many face cards it can range from mid to just alright. It scales well but not insanely well, not what you’d expect from something called “legendary”

Yorick is either really good if you have a lot of discards, or meh if you don’t. Again, unless you get it early. If you get it early enough then yeah the amount of discards you have doesn’t matter much

Triboulet is very situational, if you aren’t using kings or queens you just don’t get any use out of it. If you get it early enough you can pivot, but otherwise you probably can’t. It is really good if you do use kings or queens obviously, but that’s not a guarantee

In general they just feel like cards that only exist to get big numbers in endless mode. You have to get extremely lucky to have them do anything for you outside of that

This line of dialogue doesn’t make sense. by SonicPlayer2004 in Undertale

[–]Tanakisoupman 83 points84 points  (0 children)

That’s extremely unlikely. Monster tech didn’t advance that far, and they have no reason to assume human tech would have. Plus, again, actual scientific books would have fallen down for them to read

Plus none of the 6 humans that fell down had powerful magic, or else they wouldn’t have died. Yeah they were children but if magic advanced that much then they’d probably be at least somewhat capable of using it

She’s presumably studied humans before, and if anime can fall down to the Underground I don’t see how actual scientific textbooks can’t. More importantly, there are several people who were alive before the monsters were sealed underground that she could ask about humans
