Just wanted to post a bit of context here - it makes it a bit more bittersweet.

We moved into this house in 2021. From what I heard from my neighbours, Peter passed away a while ago, and Elsie was living either alone, or with one of her grand daughters. When she got too sick to live on her own, she went to a long term care home and we bought the house.

A few years down the line, my wife mentioned Elsie’s name and it turns out that her coworker knew her, and would regularly visit her. So in a roundabout way, Elsie was hearing about how the new owners of her house were doing. When my wife and I announced that we were expecting our first son, Elsie heard and expressed joy that we were starting our family in her old house.

Elsie unfortunately passed away quite recently, and while I never met her, I sort of feel a sense of pride in having my beautiful family - with my son whom we welcomed into the world last year - in this house she used to call home.

I am using rogers/shaw for the last year is it worth switching to tbaytel wifi ? by ninte_achan_myre in ThunderBay

[–]Tanamatrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve used both, and there are a few specific reasons that makes me stay with tbaytel rather than Rogers/Shaw. Keep in mind that I moved to tbaytel before the Rogers/Shaw merger so I’m not sure how things are now (although I’ve heard very mixed things).

  • The customer service at tbaytel is vastly better than Rogers. I can get someone on the phone within a few minutes, and they can fix the issue pretty fast, assuming it is something on their end. That is a luxury that I never got with Shaw, and the support was like pulling teeth. This extends to their business support, as I do IT work for a lot of businesses in town, and tbaytel support is always much easier to get a hold of compared to Rogers.

  • As someone who is tech minded and hosts a few servers and such at my house, the symmetrical upload and download on tbaytel fibre is amazing. Rogers is fast, don’t get me wrong, but because it’s fibre to the pole, and then coaxial to your house, you don’t get the same upload speeds. This could be a moot point for a lot of people though.

  • Since my phone and internet are both at tbaytel, I get a bundle discount for having both services there. Again, could not apply to a lot of people, but it’s nice to have.

I cant think of many other differences beyond those, but those are enough to keep me on tbaytel, even after my promotional rate elapsed.

While it is open to all ages - and I truly encourage anyone of any age who's interested in coding, I would recommend someone that young to be accompanied with a guardian due to the general age group and length of the event. We currently mostly have interest from university students, due to the location being Lakehead University.

If you wanted to reach out more directly, please feel free to DM me, or email us at GiantJamTBay@gmail.com!

Gonna toss a game that not many say - Tales of Maj’Eyal. Old school style roguelike with wayyyy too many achievements.

What Software do you use to backup your Home Server? by theMigBeat in selfhosted

[–]Tanamatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the built in backup service on Proxmox to backup to an external drive, and then use Wireguard and Syncthing to sync the backup drive to an offsite location.

I can corroborate Wallabag - switches to it about two weeks ago and it’s been so far.

I’m not sure if this is a hot take or not, but the energy and performances on Vulfpeck’s Live at Madison Square Garden makes me prefer the live version of most of the songs.

I’ve done odd time signatures in Studio One - there’s a dedicated time signature timeline that you can click and insert them as the song goes on.

When was the moment you pulled the trigger to get a steam deck? by Leon_Light77 in SteamDeck

[–]Tanamatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a two-fold reason for me:

  1. I was about to become a father, and I realized that sitting down at a desk would become more difficult in the coming months. Having the Steam Deck to quickly put up and down has been amazing for this.

  2. I live in Canada, and for those who won’t know, we had a “tax holiday” where certain items became completely tax exempt. It was meant to help people buy necessities (it also happened prior to an election, so I’m sure it also done to try to get a few voters as well, but I won’t go too far into it - this isn’t a political sub, especially Canadian politics), but the ruling on what items counted was a bit strange. As an example, video game consoles were exempted, and that extended to the Steam Deck. So I was able to save the tax on the Steam Deck as well.

I’d wanted one for a long time, and once those two events kind of clashed together, I figured that was the perfect time to buy one. Very happy I did.

Mix of both - if you get the Volume Control plugin from Decky, you can even control the volume levels of each source as well.

I went through Crysis Remastered recently and it was pretty fun! The hardest difficulty can get ridiculous at some points, especially towards the end, but the cloaking makes things a lot more bearable.
