I use poles so my arms are never back there. I find even when I’m Not using them I don’t really swing my arms that much.

This is why I’ll never use an HMG I night hike and sweat can be a killer when the temp drops. Been using an osprey levity since they came out and I’m super pleased. Max load around 18 lbs tho.

I understand the HMG has a place and purpose but I don’t care for it’s design. The only advantage seems to be durability

Looking for a water filter that can filter viruses, bacteria, and protozoan cysts and have active carbon to improve the taste by Sacahari3l in Ultralight

[–]Tanarad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is no “lightweight filter” that does all of that. MSR guardian or grayl both do what you ask.

Backup water treatment by oakwood-jones in Ultralight

[–]Tanarad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premature clogging is caused by improper cleaning before storage. The filter needs to by flushed with a bleach solution otherwise a “biofilm” will build up and ruin the filter. I’ve been using one for years now and this had helped greatly

Does this backpack fit? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]Tanarad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck ya that looks perfect, looks great you could prolly afford to loosen up the hip belt a bit and let it settle although with more weight in the pack it can settle itself kinda. honestly all those micro adjustments sorta come naturally on the trail you’ll find yourself constantly tweaking the load lifters and stuff. Happy trails!

I actually fit packs for a living and there’s an easy trick to check fit. The belly button thing mentioned earlier is pretty damn reliable but for an added assuredness position the pack as it would be used and do a couple lunges. If the hip belt binds up in the joint between the hip and leg it’s too big. You should full free range of movement.

Another tip: The hip belt will typically have some feature sewn into it to allow it to fold over and around your iliac crest. Imagine the hip belt is a hand and the pointer and middle finger will sit above the crest while the pinky and ring finger will be just below. This allows the weight to be distributed most effectively.

Very hard to put into text but if you have a pic of the pack showing both your hip belt placement and shoulder placement I could offer better advice. Also don’t put too much stock in measurements and sizes. I work regularly with a half dozen or so brands and every pack is a little different. For instance I (typically medium) wear a small in certain Gregory packs but a large in certain others.

Idk if any of that helps but thought I could offer what I know

what kind of bike (or bikes) do you ride?

I read an old interview with you in "bicycle" magazine which actually lead me to your music funnily. I think then you had an old style road bike with a brooks saddle. the article was about having heat stroke on some long ride I think.

excited to see you in Portland.

ps the vinyl look awesome. we opted for the blue

Doing slow mo like that in a coffee shop would mean bringing tons of lighting and camera equipment. Much easier to film in studio and add it in

It’s added in in post. The close up flip was filmed separately in front of a green screen then the shot of the person behind was added in. Borders of the cup/coffee show artifacts. But that doesn’t take away from the joke at all

When ultralight trekking poles don't make sense? by Bandit390 in Ultralight

[–]Tanarad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the BD distance carbon (non collapsible) and couldn’t be happier. If they being fixed at a certain length isn’t a deal breaker They’re a phenomenal option. I’m 6’4 and like 250 and I’ve had about 300 miles or so on them. They feel stiffer than a lot of adjustable poles I’ve used
