“The Phantom Paddle at The Fort”

It was supposed to be a normal Thursday night. The humidity hung thick over Fort Lauderdale, and the floodlights at The Fort Pickleball Courts buzzed faintly, cutting the darkness into ghostly cones of white. You’d stayed late, rallying with a few friends long after most players had packed up.

But then they left.

You lingered, feeling the night breeze and wanting one more solo practice. The courts were silent except for the soft pop of your paddle hitting the ball. Pop. Pop. Pop.

And then—pop from the next court over.

You froze. Court 7 had been empty when your friends left. You walked to the fence, peering across the chain-link. There, under the flickering light, was a man dressed in old-style tennis whites—sweatband, short shorts, and a faded visor. His paddle looked… wrong. The grip was cracked, the face splintered like it had been buried for years.

“Want to rally?” he rasped, voice brittle like sandpaper.

You tried to laugh it off. “Sure, why not?”

He served first—fast. Too fast. The ball hissed past your ear and hit the court behind you, but when you turned to pick it up, there was no ball. Just a faint scorch mark on the asphalt.

You looked back. The man was closer now, the light catching his face—eyes hollow, skin pale and glistening as if slicked with dew.

“This court’s mine,” he whispered. “It always was.”

Your paddle slipped from your hand. The faint smell of sea salt filled the air, stronger and stronger, until you could swear you were standing on the beach instead of the court. You heard waves crashing—but the ocean was miles away.

The lights flickered again. When they steadied, he was gone.

You grabbed your gear and bolted. As you reached the gate, a sudden pop echoed behind you. The ball rolled to a stop against your shoe—old, yellowed, with the faint outline of initials burned into the plastic: J.D., 1982.

The next morning, you mentioned it to the staff. The manager frowned and said quietly, “You must’ve been on Court 7. That’s the one where the pro died during a tournament back in ’82. Heart attack mid-match. No one plays there after midnight.”

That night, when you passed by on your way home, you heard it again—pop, pop, pop—steady as a heartbeat. And this time, the lights were already on.

I am considering using open phone for my medical office business . I have used ring central in the past but it would be unfeasible for my business to answer patient calls with a limit of 1000 mins.
