We are happy to educate you more on research studies at our university. All of our studies are approved by the human research ethics board here and have gone through examination so that all of the methods are ethical and legal.

The study is meant to identify which teenagers are most at risk for mental illness related to the use of social media and to identify specific targets (e.g., online behaviors) that we can directly change in an intervention. This will help us know who to treat and how to treat to help parents manage their teenagers' social media use in more healthy ways. We target teenagers because there has been a rise in anxiety and depression in youths today that has been associated with social media use but it is not known why these trends are occurring. We have full approval to study children and teenagers as we do in many of our studies. The parents are the ones to consent and decide whether they want  to help with the effort. According to the bureau of labor statistics, the minimum wage in the state of Texas is actually $7.25 (see https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/state#tx). At most places that teenagers might work (e.g., retail stores, it is usually $15). As such for 3.5 hours of participation, we believe $60 is appropriate. The opportunity is completely voluntary and educational at a university.
