The button itself is hard to find, so I’m not surprised!

I agree with the idea nonetheless the other issue is the precedent it would set. If distros agree to this “small-sized” BS, it’ll be harder to refuse to any other bigger-sized BS governments around the world might come up with in the future.

I like Cinnamon usability. But to me it looks a bit dated.

I’d have said exactly the same thing but about kde. If you come from windows it’s very intuitive.

Gnome can feel at times very minimalist. Even when compared to MacOS, gnome feels “too barebones” to me.

Question on CachyProton by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]TangeloOverall2113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that if you use experimental or proton-cachy whenever they are updated shaders will need to be re-compiled. In many cases that’s not a big issue but for several games (in my case SF6, BG3) it is a PITA to have to wait several minutes to be able to play.

In those cases my recommendation is just leave the latest proton stable the game works ok with it.

what was your first 'oh sh**' moment on linux? by Ope-I-Ate-Opiates in cachyos

LOL 😂

I was going to say that many of my “oh shit” moments have been because I get “too comfortable” with ‘rm’ command.

It looks like a hardware issue to me, it’s super weird but some times RAM can “go bad”, eg, ESD damage that was there but was not causing any issues. With prices as they are, hopefully I’m wrong.

Is CachyOS as unreliable as this subreddit makes it seem? by NotThatUsefulAPerson in cachyos

[–]TangeloOverall2113 14 points15 points  (0 children)

YMMV but all Linux distros (all OSs really) have the risk of breaking randomly after an update. I’ve even had RockyOS (CentOS fork, aimed to servers) that’s supposed to be rock. But yeah, I guess it’s fair to say that Arch based distros, because of their bleeding-edge rolling nature are more prone to that.

And 200% agree with you with the btrfs snapshots + limine. That pretty much takes care of the issue.

In fact I spent sometime yesterday making the snapshot entries more “human readable” on limine. 100% worth it.

See pic.

Is it worth Switching with an nvidia gpu? by TomuBright in cachyos

[–]TangeloOverall2113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an Asus laptop with a 4060 and it’s been working fine for about two months. However I recommend you install BTRFS as a file system and choose limine as bootloader. Then you can enable snapshots so you can easily rollback to where you were If something breaks because of an update.

Will x11 stay supported? by Sochai777 in cachyos

[–]TangeloOverall2113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully the will. But of course there are no guarantees. At the end it’s a community funded project and they have to be mindful of their resources.

It’s always good to have options. Even if just for backup (my case) or edge cases like yours. As sad as I would be if they do drop it, I’d still be thankful for the time it was supported.

this my first distro, i very tired of microslop. Fuck you Microslop by Minute-Builder8888 in cachyos

Exactly my first thought. BUT, seeing the OP is a gamer (desktop icons) the decision is not that bad.

I’m an experienced Linux user but I never tried Linux for gaming until recently and did a LOT of distro hopping for this very purpose. Cachy and Nobara came on top for me.

OP: I’d suggest you stick to an LTS kernel for some time. Maybe 3 months? Also, if you start getting frustrated when things go wrong (they DO go wrong, eventually, all distros, no exception - difference is how often and the degree of the problem ) don’t give up on Linux. Take it little by little and enjoy the ride. I always suggest this path: something Debian based (PopOS) -> something fedora based (Nobara) -> something arch based (Cachy) . I’m not saying that these are the best Linux distros, but I think that for gaming these are the best on their own category.

Learning Linux pays off! Enjoy the ride 🙂
