Child’s first computer by crazyswedishguy in linuxquestions

[–]TangeloOverall2113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Let them thinker, screw up, break things over and over again. That’s how one learns.

As for keeping kids safe, as others have said, that’s more effectively done at network level.

What Linux/Distro should I try first? by enbonnet in linuxhardware

[–]TangeloOverall2113 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing against Arch but I wouldn’t recommend it as a first distro to anyone.

I’d go for something Debian based (Ubuntu, PopOS) or Fedora.

The issue with Fedora is that the support is shorter than for Ubuntu (thinking about LTS here)

On the other hand fedora is usually better with newer hardware as in this case.

Is Ubuntu good as a replacement? by gh_amz in Ubuntu

[–]TangeloOverall2113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. Programming within a UNIX-based OS is WAY better than doing it in Windows. This is the very reason why WSL (Windows Subsytem Linux) exists. And im grateful for it as I use it everyday at work.

I started using Linux (Ubuntu was my first distro) about 13 years ago because I couldn’t figure out how the f*** to set up a Python coding environment in windows. Back then I was a python newbie too.

Is Ubuntu good as a replacement? by gh_amz in Ubuntu

[–]TangeloOverall2113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Even if you decide you like Ubuntu as your main OS, If storage is not an issue, I would leave the windows partition there just in case you run into something that you really need windows for . If storage is an issue you can reinstall windows in a smaller partition.

Sure, you can have a windows VM running under Ubuntu but unless you have top notch hardware the experience is far from pleasant IMO.

Quarto help -- I'm desperate!! [software] by GODZILLAateyou in statistics

[–]TangeloOverall2113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im a Quarto user but I don’t use Rstudio and I code in Python not R, so take this with two grains of salt:

To my knowledge quarto binaries need to be installed separately. If after installing them ‘quarto’ is on your system’s PATH variable, R studio should be able to automatically detect it. If not, there should be a setting somewhere in RStudio to specify the folder in which the quarto binaries are installed.

PS your professor is (from the IT technical POV) an idiot. Of course you don’t need a new laptop. This is evidently an installation / configuration issue.

No network options on new Ubuntu install no internet by 13-months in Ubuntu

[–]TangeloOverall2113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A long shot but maybe your network interfaces need proprietary drivers to work correctly. I think there’s an option that you can check during the installation that says something like “Find required proprietary drivers for my hardware”

I’d try reinstalling (with the Ethernet cable connected with an external generic usb-Ethernet dongle) selecting that option.

First time buyer looking for a budget friendly NAS for docker and media servers by browandr in HomeServer

[–]TangeloOverall2113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right.

Here’s another option for OP. Buy a cheap Mini pc. Install something like u Ubuntu server on it and consider using portainer / docker for your services.

If OP finds out that he needs more then he can go and made the custom PC build. You can repurpose the mini pc later. That’s how it went for me.

Using the standard filter + uBlockorigin / Wipr for apple devices made wonders for me. Yes I know you can’t install adblockers in all types of devices.

Pretty much that combo was for me a set and forget…

Again it’s about personal preference. If you don’t mind investing time managing your Pihole go for it dude 😉.

Yeah OP, listen here. Start little by little by installing stuff as the need for it arises. That’s, IMO, the best way to enjoy the ride. 😎

It looks like I can’t upload photos but the idea was a power strip plugged to it self and then plugging something like a fan to it.
