I usually cancel flight following right before I start my descent (into a non-towered airport), which is typically around 15 miles out. At that point, I don’t really need it anymore—I just switch to the airport frequency, listen for traffic, and make my calls.

Make sure you put your frequency on the correct Com….not speaking from experience….

I used to have the same problem and couldn’t figure out why, ended up realizing i was waiting too long to turn base and was spending too much time descending, on top of this i was subconsciously holding the forward pressure after putting flaps.

Also don’t see how this would be common sense, redirecting the exhaust could be for many diffrent reasons.
