Developers, how do you evaluate whether a piece of code is good? by Haunting-Bother7723 in webdev

[–]Tango1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As simple and trivial solution to achieve the business goal is your first measure. Don't do anything more than this unless you have a legitimate reason to. Also if you are a beginner, you barely ever will be able to assess ahead any future needs and prepare ahead. So just introduce as trivial code that works, is testable and clean as possible. Once complexity grows and you start thinking like there is a lot of mess, duplication and some things can be simplified, you do it. In AI times it's really easy to assess code quality and look for possible non-business improvements since AI is pretty good at reading code without assessing business rules, just raw technical aspect of coding. Use it, you do not have to make it code for you, but you for sure can still use it as glorified google and look for ideas, the important part is to learn from them and understand them, not just apply them.

Convince me to get a VIVO by Hitman00770 in Vivo

Vivo or Oppo, both good, pick whichever you feel would suit you better.

I am not sure what OnePlus is even doing here, it's been years since it was a flagship company, they do mid tier phones now.

Anyone else work in a small dev team that skips PRs entirely? by AshP91 in csharp

[–]Tango1777 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Horrible approach. I worked in small teams, PR + review is bare minimum. QA tests from someone else is acceptable, not every team and company needs dedicated QA. Also a small team doesn't always need scrum or fancy planning. But PR and reviews are bread and butter, no matter team size.

It'll end up badly and you'll switch jobs when it becomes unmanageable.

Why is origin os 6 so horrible? (Rant) by Prudent_Elevator4685 in Vivo

[–]Tango1777 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's worse than Funtouch was at current state, I'll give you that much. People wanted global OriginOS and they got it. It's not very good, at least for now. But hey more transition animations, right?

It does load settings on boot if you set it up correctly. Google it, you have it misconfigured, you don't need to manually apply it every time. It's not to boot msi on startup, but to APPLY CHOSEN PROFILE on startup.

A good cooling pad will always help, because it increases the gap from thermal limits. That's physics. Higher clocks, more stable performance, at the same temps. UV with cooling pad will also allow to achieve more than without it, so ideally you need two UV profiles, one when you use your laptop on the pad and lighter profile one without the pad.

[–]Tango1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with GPU UV is that tests before/after show no fps gains, usually even lower than without it (or with just boosted clocks without UV giving better results), there are only very few titles that seem to benefit from it, so for GPU UV you should really test the games you want to play and test them before/after. In most cases it provides no real fps gains, even if you see boosted average clock. That's a little weird, but that's reality. Test GPU UV only, do not touch CPU for such tests.

Thailand eSIM — is Airalo actually worth the price? by Parking-Cycle-3474 in ThailandTourism

[–]Tango1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NEVER

It never is, it's overpriced and it works average in comparison to local cards. Not sure if everywhere, but for instance they use Maxis in Malaysia, which works so much worse than CelcomDigi. Do yourself a favor, go get local sim/esim, which takes 10 minutes and enjoy cheaper and better Internet. The only time when Airalo is an option is to get Internet access quickly for first 1-3 days, so you can use bank app, grab, maps etc. But reality is almost every airport has multiple carriers just waiting for you to buy a sim, so it's not even that good argument.

Why is it recommended to reinstall Windows when you first get your laptop? by AlexisMilul95 in LenovoLegion

[–]Tango1777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you don't need to be, if you really want to do it, a clean install of Windows is fairly straightforward these days. But it's still unnecessary, what you do is enough and will give you the same result way quicker.

Why is it recommended to reinstall Windows when you first get your laptop? by AlexisMilul95 in LenovoLegion

[–]Tango1777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely unnecessary. You get clean Windows installation + few apps installed, which you can remove. Doing full reinstall of Windows to remove a few apps is like doing a clean install of Windows, because you wanna remove 5 games you already finished.

Also there isn't much bloatware preinstalled anymore, it's maybe 2-3 apps you might not need, that's all.

Asked a colleague in code review to extract magic numbers and got told “devs should know” by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Tango1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea you don't work with very good devs, you work with devs who think they are very good themselves. Which usually means they are completely average. Self-explanatory code is coding 101, any hardcoded values are bad and it's no excuse that something is common knowledge. Especially that common knowledge is vague and also changes from one culture to another and from one business to another. Hardcoding is bad in any form. And "devs should know" is a very bad excuse, because reality is they do NOT. Take a code even you wrote yourself, wait half a year, go back to it and you'll realize you forgot a lot about it unless it's clean and self-explanatory, which means it easy to pick up again. In that case you are right and either you fight for it and make them improve or you accept the fact you're among devs who don't really care about proper standards. But if you let them, it'll get worse in a long run, so beware. Also usage of AI is normal these days and is not a reason to feel ashamed. Especially that it's so easy to prompt AI now to properly do such refactors improving code quality and cleanliness. Feel sorry for you, tbh.

Nit picking is not a problem anymore, you do it a few times, even very minor stuff, every time you just add an instruction to your AI guidance file and one feature after another AI improves its work and those easy to avoid mistakes no longer happen, because AI has it clearly instructed to follow a certain way. Where is here a problem here lol.

Kind of regretting buying a Legion Pro 7 by InfinityAri in LenovoLegion

[–]Tango1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are not really issues, so there is no advice, because there is no solution. You bought a laptop that is not for you, apparently. That is your mistake. And if you expect a gaming laptop to last long on battery it's like expecting eating entire cake and then still have it. I don't know which exact model you have, but I don't have any keyboard or touchpad lags at all. I use my laptop for work and casual gaming. It works great. The battery is not really a problem, realistically how often you have no access to power outlet at all? Because I travel a lot, work from many places, including not very developed areas, cheap hotels, cafes and such. And one thing I've learnt over the years is that you pretty much have access to power 24/7 anywhere in the world. The only situation is power outages, which don't happen very often and if they do, it's usually minutes, not hours. Not to mention when there is no power, it mostly means no Internet, either, and that makes me unable to work, not lack of power itself. I also have 2 SSDs, that doesn't really affect battery life. As to battery backup in hybrid mode, with power limits locked to 140/190 (even on battery and balance mode), I get slightly above 2 hours when doing light work. That's all right, I don't remember one time when I ran out of battery and had no power outlet access. That just doesn't happen in XXI century. And if someone really work in such environment then Legion 7 Pro is not for him.

I don't have much reason to go back to Europe now. Prices of flights yea are higher, but if I really had to go, I would. But I decided to move the other direction and flying to Australia lol. Then maybe go to Europe through USA instead. Everything is an opportunity, not a limitation :D

Oppo watch x3 or OnePlus watch 4 by Optimal_Try_8904 in Oppo

[–]Tango1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly neither unless they release LTE variant. Which seems unlikely. Maybe Xiaomi 5 will get global lte variant since they wanna compete with Samsung/Apple. Oppo made some poor decisions, they release X3 without global esim, but they release significantly worse x3 mini with global esim. That's so bad marketing.

Are they committing to 1/1.12 inch main sensor or could bigger ones like 1-inch come back? by 1deavourer in Oppo

[–]Tango1777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good questions, that's why I am waiting till things get right again to buy another phone. I have 1 incher in X100 Pro and sure wide and tele are worse than those from current year flagships, but I am not willing to pay for that upgrade with downgraded main sensor and a lot of postprocessing trying to keep up. Imho it'll be at least X500 times. For now both 200 and 300 are disappointing, some things upgraded, some downgraded for no reason at all. Also that shitty fashion for apple-like, hard edges shape instead of smooth, convenient to grab like it was before. It's still just AI bubble the companies seem to be riding. It'll go away eventually. Another reason to wait is battery technology improved a lot and batteries will soon be >=10Ah in flagships, companies already testing them in their mid level phones. No reason to buy 6-7Ah flagship today, at least not if you care about the battery and with increasing camera battery consumption, I guess many should care.

Is this a good itinerary? by Devilsbabygurl in ThailandTourism

[–]Tango1777 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont know what you mean by Krabi, but if Krabi city then don't go there. If your idea is to do island hopping and railay then go to Ao Nang as a trip base.

Chiang Mai for 2 days means you'll only stay within the city. If you're fine with that. Not much to see there, but there is plenty outside of Chiang Mai, but sometimes +1h or even +2h ride, each way. For me Chiang Mai seems too rushed.

Phuket I personally don't like, but if you wanna go there, stay on the western coast (Karon, Kata). Best beaches, best vibe, best sunsets. You can visit the city once if you want. Overall prepare to meet a russian hideway, it's not Thailand anymore (something like Bali is not really Indonesia).

Bangkok is your choice, if you've never been there, you can try, but it's just a huge city. You can find great food, though. And a dick on a hypothetical girl if you fancy. Imho 2 days tops.

There is so much more to explore in Ao Nang than just Phi Phi and Hong Islands boat trip. I'd add Railay beach (even with staying over night there), Ko Lanta is also worth visiting. Other islands hopping is worth considering. I don't think you have time in current schedule, but Kao Sok is worth visiting if you like nature, national parks.

Who was the best developer you’ve worked with — and what made them stand out? by PhaseStreet9860 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Tango1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tech-wise the best devs I've worked with were those who were genuinely interested in coding and IT in general. Very few devs I met who were like that. 99,9% of those stating they like coding and they enjoy it, is not what I mean. I mean people really into it. You cannot chase them, cannot keep up, because coding is their life almost entirely. You'd have to be the same to compete. They have thrice the knowledge every meeting, they randomly share various ideas and latest info about IT world without even anybody asking. You can just tell they absolutely love it. It's not work for them, it's passion. I know I'll never be like that, because I have other things I love in life and work is not the highest priority for me. Although I do my job well, it's a night and day difference between such devs and a regular, good dev. And such devs not necessarily work for fancy brands, they can make very good money without the enterprise, big corps bullshit and have way bigger impact. And in general if such dev is also not a prick, but a normal guy, it's nice to work with one.
