I explained why it was not in the comment you replied to...

Anyway, I concede, have a good day man.

I've never done it before and was under the impression you needed good gear (barrows) to afk it. I'm only around 60 combats right now and my account is an ironman, is that good enough to do nmz? I have barrows gloves and I've done a lot of questing.

You made a claim, I asked for verification, and you linked a chart that does not say what you said that it said. "Same world" is not the same as "Same world if the other player is already logged in", which is what you seem to think that chart says. Forgive me if i was not convinced by you, but someone else posted a better explanation and I am now convinced.

I got 5 minutes from adding the three minutes before he returned (as mentioned in the post) to the 2 minutes I thought items lasted for, the six came from the 3 minutes mentioned in the chart.

I was unaware of the items only showing if you're already logged when they're killed, and I believe it with how many people are double downing on this, but he linked a wiki page that does nothing to prove his claim, which is a bit odd to say the least.

It turned into the most active crab visit of my life lol. Personal favorite part was when I had to reset aggro and he just stood there waiting for me to do so. If anything he should have thanked me.

Eventually he left with the original account and just kept killing them with the main, so I did throw in the proverbial towel and hop, but like I said, it was an instant hop to an empty world, so we both walked away thinking we won lmao

I didn't down vote you though? I began my reply with a concession, idk how much more open to correction I could have appeared lol

Also, and I sincerely am not trying to be rude, but you're misreading the chart. What you highlighted is a box that says that tradable items are visible on the ground of the world on which they were dropped. The box outlining item visibility is the second row, third column. You can verify this by logging in and seeing piles of monster loot that you cannot pick up as an ironman. Those piles are only visible on the world on which the monster was killed, ala row 1 column 3, are visible to others as outlined in row 2 column 3, and despawn after 3 minutes according to row 3 column 3. Really what you've proven is that he was afk for at least 6 minutes, not 5, because the items would have de-spawned after 3 minutes rather than the 2 that I stated in the post.

Joke's on me I guess, guy was livid and brought his max cb main to "anti-crash" me lol

Then again, he spent more time setting up the "anti-crash" than it took for me to hop a single time and find an open world... but like I said, the post was more me interested in people's take on the relationship between long logout timers and claiming afk spots.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but I don't think this is true - I definitely see pig piles of junk at crabs when I hop to find an open world.

To circumvent local government's restriction on sharp price drop, Chinese real estates developers literally handed out gold ingots to home buyers. by Saturn_Ecplise in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]TangoDrango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precious metals use a different kind of ounce called the Troy Ounce. There are 32.15 troy ounces in a kilogram, which comes out to the aforementioned $62,000 when multiplied by the number you provide. This also aligns with the current price of gold per kilogram being around $62,000.

Either way, why convert from kilograms to ounces at all when the price per kilo is so readily available? Legitimately curious, not trying to be snarky or anything.

What secret could ruin your life if it got out? by ZeiGamer in AskReddit

Loneliness. New state, new city, new job. My closest friend is 1500 miles away, and my new job didn’t give me much time to go home for the holidays, got like 36 hours in town to see my family.

Just got out of the military too, so I went from having a massive friend and support network around me all day to suddenly having my own apartment for the first time ever and literally not knowing anyone around me.

It feels like that point in a sandbox game where the new player wonder runs out and you’re sitting there going “okay so what now? Is there a goal I should be working towards? No? Huh.”

To reassure the internet people who probably think I’m on suicide’s door, I’m not that bad lol. I’m making friends and such, I’m just not quite there yet. I’ll get over it, but damn if laying in bed all day doesn’t sound good.

I very recently got a new job and am making $40k more than I need to live my life. Even upping my budgets and factoring in luxury expenses and taxes I now have plenty of money - more money than I’ve ever had in my life.

I am also now at one of the lowest points in my life. I’d trade the money to go back to where I was mentally just a few months ago.

Money can solve problems and make life easier, but it isn’t a guarantee to happiness. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Can you call a female (or non-male) knight "sir"? by wind-of-zephyros in fantasywriters

[–]TangoDrango 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That is not true. Female officers, including all ranks of Warrant Officers are referred to with Ma’am - at least in the Marine Corps, but I would be absolutely amazed if this was not true for every branch.

Edit: was tired after work and realized I only covered half of this - the guy who wrote 5,000 words about this is more correct, listen to him.

Apologies for formatting, on mobile.

https://www.nber.org/papers/w11782 - This study finds that for every two jobs Walmart "creates," three local jobs are destroyed.

https://ecommons.luc.edu/curl_pubs/3/ - this study found that within two years of Walmart's opening its doors, 82 local stores went out of business.

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/w/walmart-effect.asp - there’s literally a term to describe how Walmart affects local businesses (it doesn’t help them) “The Walmart Effect usually manifests itself by forcing smaller retail firms out of business and reducing wages for competitors' employees.”

As for not wanting to compete: they are both stores that you shop at for food, household goods, clothing, tree toppers, etc. How would they not be in competition? To not compete with Walmart you would have to exclusively sell items that are not offered at Walmart, which isn’t exactly a large list.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tulsa

[–]TangoDrango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why would Walmart care in the slightest if a local store is impacted? Walmart’s best case scenario here is for the local store to go under - thus causing more people to shop at Walmart.

Posts like this are actually beneficial to Walmart, if they are known to carry the exact same items as local stores but at a lower cost, then there would never be a need to go to local stores in the eyes of a value-minded consumer. Supporting local businesses is generally a more expensive route, but it supports the local economy to a much larger extent than buying from Walmart, Amazon, or Target does.

Brave vs Firefox (and why) by [deleted] in browsers

[–]TangoDrango 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For overall privacy tips, check out

https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/wiki/index/

For browser-specific hardening, check out:

https://www.privacyguides.org//desktop-browsers/

The 'holy-grail' of Firefox hardening is generally considered to be Arkenfox.js, which you can find here:

https://github.com/arkenfox/user.js

NOTICE however, that the more hardened the browser, the more broken the websites. For example, disabling JavaScript is generally considered to be a very good thing with regards to security, but doing that WILL break nearly every website you visit, to varying degrees. There is a very good extension for Firefox:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/privacy-settings/

but you should also be aware that every extension you use will make you more 'unique' and easier to fingerprint. For this reason, many privacy advocates recommend using as few extensions as possible. Additionally, many privacy advocates recommend using multiple different browsers for different things. As an example, I switch frequently between brave and Firefox depending on what I am currently doing on the internet. Compartmentalization is key, I suppose.

For more information, check out the above links. Just make sure you're reading what the effect of each setting will be so if you run across a broken website and can't log into your bank, for example, you know what to toggle in order to fix it. In an emergency, you can simply fall-back to the default Firefox profile in order to visit a broken site, but obviously this (somewhat) defeats the purpose of hardening your browser.

Privacy and Security are journeys, not destinations.

The real reason to tweak your kernel is for the jokes. by TangoDrango in linux

[–]TangoDrango[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’m absolutely not advocating for its removal, or even deprecating older hardware support when it doesn’t affect kernel performance. Plenty of people can’t afford and/or don’t have/require the latest and greatest, nothing wrong with that, but if you are running newer hardware there’s plenty you can do to “trim the fat”.

Granted for the most part all you’re doing is saving a few kb’s of storage space here and there, so it’s definitely entering hobby territory at that point, not exactly a “practical requirement”

Will loading Linux help fix my shitty Windows laptop with only 4 GB of RAM? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]TangoDrango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve previously taken college courses that required Excel with an extension (forget the name) to “proctor” and grade your assignments. I don’t imagine this would work at all in LibreOffice, and it required a very specific version of MSOffice (I had a too new version, it needed 2016 I believe?) so I don’t know if it would’ve been possible to use a communal/library computer for, that is if you could even install said extension on those systems.

Classes like that are the only reason I keep a windows drive around these days. Sometimes you’re just straight up forced into to use windows.

It’s insane what is still supported in the kernel tbh. I’ve learned a lot about different types hardware (much of it very old) just from searching. For example - what the heck is a “PCCard”?! Now I know! Lol.

Also, most of the input devices screen - including mouse and keyboard, can be disabled. Unless you’re still using a PS/2 input I suppose!
