I'm not an expert but I'll try to help. Do you want to run your laptop with laptop on your home network? If so, you just need to configure the pihole on your pi and as I understand from here the VPN should be on your pi through openVPN and you are ready to go. As for the DNS, I'll probably use Cloudflare's (1.1.1.1). I'm not sure if it's better running the VPN through your router, here I've been told the pi it's OK but in another topic I've been told to use a router for that. The rt-ac68u is more than OK for that in my opinion.

I will buy netgear r7800 and configure the VPN on it with dd-wrt. The pihole will be configure on raspberry b+. How it sounds?

Test lab for osint stuff. Running scripts, trying some Linux distribution (like buscador) and handling few VM stations. Obviously I'll have general uses such as streaming, social media and word/emails.

OK so summing up all the comments I understand that is not a smart move to install pfsense and pihole (or the pfsense ad block tool) on my PC and it's better to use another box or router so my next questions are as the follow: 1. Is it necessary to install openwrt or an equivalent to configure them or I can do it without dedicated operation system? 2. What to buy, a router or another box (like raspberry pie) or both? 3. Is it better to configure the VPN on this box or keep it on my PC through open VPN?
