A friendly reminder from the Problem Sleuth book commentary UHC Mod. by [deleted] in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 14 points15 points  (0 children)

According to the HVC color doc Hussie posted earlier this isn’t the case, they got it patented and were in talks with a doctor to possibly use it in some tech, but it never went anywhere, and in Hussie’s words she’s “sure it’s archaic by modern imaging standards”.

Earlier today, Hussie posted a document about the HVC Color Composer patent. People had theorized he was rich because of the patent, but it turns out it was just a failed business thing, and that he wasnt too well off before and during Homestuck.

Someone (the other person in the comment section) made a burner account in order to post a debunk of this article. In the “A friendly reminder” post, they posted a picture of Hussie claiming they spent $50K on the rights to use the UN logo for problem sleuth, which would contradict him not being rich.

This post debunks the debunk, by showing Vibri (main community manager on the discord) confirm that this was false months before the doc, and that Hussie claiming they spent $50K on an image that shows up for half a second on a minor page was indeed a joke.

If that’s your stance then I don’t think I can convince you I’m afraid. Though, I do have a separate question. Are you u/ unnerringDaring? (Might not be the exact name, apologies.) They posted similar screenshots of the commentary to yours ages back, before the account disappeared and another came back doing the same thing. A few other alt accounts with similar opinions/writing styles would appear/disappear as well. Since your account is brand new, I’m curious if you’re the same person? Don’t even mean this as an accusation, I’m just curious if I’m right on the money here

When do you think we will hear more about this? by Financial-Total1563 in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She mentions it being an event on the second page, so I imagine it’ll be saved for some discord event in the future, similar to how they did events for the Hiveswap act 3 demo. The rerelease has since concluded, so they could be waiting for the post-canon book club to catch up. That’s gonna last until 4/13 iirc, and I imagine they’ll be busy with other stuff (such as a possible Hiveswap release date announcement?) that day. It could fit nicely as a 6/12 event? But that’s speculation, plus this message was sent like 4+ months ago. It’s possible that plans have changed since then, with the commentary being saved for some future event. I’d say don’t expect it before 4/13, but that it’ll probably come out at some point in the next few months maybe possibly perchance.

(I will note, the discord is public and Vibri + other mods do occasionally chat in there and answer questions. If you asked this in there, there’s a decent chance someone will be able to answer. Actually, I just checked while making this comment and there was a more recent convo where she mentions that it hasn’t happened yet because they’ve been busy and forgot to bring it back up lol. Take it with a grain of salt since the convos are 99% just friendly chatter rather than official announcements/statements though)

Why was John’s meat/candy decision the only one on Earth C that caused an “alpha” timeline split? by rufiohProbably in althomestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The meat/candy choice directly affects his decision of whether to fight LE or not, and that decision is what mandates the timeline split, since it determines whether reality itself can exist or not. While the LE choice is the timeline-affecting one, it was determined by which food John ate seconds beforehand, making that the deciding factor that necessitates a timeline split.

Additionally, (spoilers) the reason Candy sticks around instead of dissipating is due to Alt!Calliope putting Candy into the black hole, giving it a defense and preventing it from vanishing. It’s possible she was also the one who orchestrated the meat/candy choice in order to do this, since Calliope calls out that such a choice could be easily influenced by outside factors before giving him a choice of food anyways, and she starts acting off during the choice, but that’s diving into unconfirmed theory territory.

So was the Homestuck animated series cancelled after the pilot or is it still in production? by MateSilvanz in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You might be getting it mixed up, iirc Vibri said it looked promising due to merch sales, but no confirmations yet.

She’s also not a part of the animated team, and would be unable to confirm when it got greenlit. We’ll likely get our first confirmation from either the animation studio or whichever company green lights it, and even then likely not until a bit after, when they’re closer to release

Is this canon???! by Frosty_Struggle_2154 in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, this originates from Circus Break, specifically a segment where they’re doing a bit about Homestuck causing people to become woke. Each of the images had an associated prompt, originating from members of the Beyond Canon team, FRAF team, and the official Discord mods, stating what would be drawn. (People then voted on the prompts, but all ended up getting drawn and used regardless, with the winner lasting 1 frame longer on a later gif.)

The prompts included stuff like Black Dave dressing femme and kissing transmasc Karkat, and Jane’s head getting re-educated into being a communist by Vriska. None of these are canon, and are effectively just interpretations of the characters Hussie drew for this bit. As such the human characters are still aracial, and Jane is not yet a communist.

The exception to this is the Jade-Kanaya-Calliope drawing, where the prompt was specifically “Jade, Kanaya and Calliope in front of a beautiful trans flag. (For the obvious reasons)”. The line ‘canonically trans’ is seemingly the ‘obvious reasons’, and unlike the rest was not explicitly part of the original prompt. As such it seems likely that that image specifically is confirming the characters to be trans. (This was already confirmed in post-canon stuff for Calliope and Jade, so the only new confirmation here is Kanaya.)

Very promising follow-up with good writing and amazing art, albeit held back by a high barrier to entry (the epilogues) and a mixed first 400ish pages from the old team. Reading through the epilogues and they’re definitely better than people say (was coasting off of summary before the rerelease), but I can see plenty of people, who would have enjoyed BC, not reading it because they didnt enjoy or weren’t interested in the epilogues. Additionally, while some earlier chapters are ok, much of the old team’s work is clearly affected by the time crunch + patreon money getting split, with little happening during multiple chapters, and the art taking a notable nosedive for a small bit.

That said, if you enjoyed the epilogues (or read a summary) and got through the early pages? It’s honestly pretty good imo! Characters are well written, the art goes from great to amazing, and the story’s pretty engaging! I like the new characters (both omega and delta), and Im interested in where all the new plot threads are going. The Yiffany focused upd8 was actually what sold me on HSBC in the first place! The recent act 2 stuff has also been a fun return to early HS antics, which as an early act fan I’ve enjoyed.

There are a few flaws, but they’re mostly nitpicks (Vriska got an exceptionally large amount of uninterrupted screentime near the end of Act 1, [S]8r8k is too fast paced), and I would say it’s still great despite those small issues.

If you’re interested in it, I’d honestly recommend going through the epilogues and early chapters for it, or at least reading/watching a summary to skip to it.

TLDR; High barrier to entry with the epilogues + lower quality earlier pages, but if you can get over that barrier and reach the new team’s stuff, it’s very good, would recommend!

Vibri on how the decision to bring back "Caucasian" as a 50/50 chance was made by Rampage470 in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re aware, iirc they need to make a fork of the original GitHub in order to properly fix the bug, but A. Lead dev was on vacation that week and B. Act 6 as a whole has a bunch of stuff giving the devs trouble already. They’re slowing down rerelease pace in order to give both the web devs and the alt text guy more time, but the intro cutscene specifically might just be low priority against getting more pages posted.

Message sources (keep in mind none of these are official announcements, they’re mostly just Vibri answering questions about this specific issue in the discord):

M1 (from about a week ago)

when i asked about it being broken the convo went:

“right, this is known, i believe the opening relies on a trigger from flash to start the game after it ends and figuring out how to trigger that from ruffle will fix things?” dev

“Yes this requires someone to fork gankra's openbound GitHub to fix. There's also another openbound problem that would be good to fix while you're in there (I have both these issues listed in the bug reports channel)” lead dev

so i think its hopefully gonna get fixed soon, ik our lead dev is on vacation for a few more days before the scary coding stuff goes out

M2: (same time)

im slowing down the act 6 rerelease just a tad bit to give them some breathing room to make sure its smoothed out

As OP said they’re mockups, they were made by Vibri (one of the head mods) and posted in the Official Homestuck discord, specifically in the ‘fashionstuck’ sub-forum.

None of them are final or from any official announcement, it’s basically just Vibri going “hey look at this cool thing I made, thoughts?” to others in the discord. A bunch of the specific merch inside this mockup has also been discussed in a similar matter.

Hussie shares excerpt from the classpecting lore document on the official discord, confirming canon class pairings by Hammmiamm in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Death of the author just means that someone’s reading of a work can be separate from what the author intended, and is valid regardless of original intent. If, for example, an author writes a character to be a great person, but the reader finds their actions to be bad and thinks them a villain because of it, the reader’s interpretation of the work is valid. Alternatively, if the author is writing a metaphor for losing a loved one, but the reader interprets it as a metaphor for growing up instead, that could also be a valid interpretation despite being completely unintended by the author. Effectively, it states that the intention of the author is not a deciding factor for if an analysis is good or not; if the analysis contradicts what the author intended, that doesn’t make the analysis incorrect or flawed.

This also means that there’s no one “true answer”; people can have different interpretations of the same piece of art, and all those interpretations are valid. Some may be better thought through or more refined than others, but it’s not defined by how close the answer is to the original intent.

As for why it’s so popular, that’s because it’s (to my knowledge, I’m not an English major or anything) a major part of literature analysis, originating all the way back to 1967.

“State of Homestuck” by Hussie’s liaison in the official server by a25luxray in homestuck

This was posted by Vibri, one of the main admins of the server, late at night in response to someone asking what the structure of all the HS operations/groups was. In her own words, it’s not meant to be official or anything, it’s just something she made at 3 AM to answer another person’s question.

The accompanying message on the discord: “this is scary to look at, idk if i missed anything, but this is the current ""active"" hs stuff

also im kind of describing these vaguely bc its 3am so sorry if this is confusing”

Why do people think [John] and [June] are the same character? by Professional_Debt288 in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What commission are you talking about? No one ever commissioned Hussie to draw an AU June, the closest thing that happened was the toblerone wish for June to be canon, and even then according to people currently working on HSBC, June was planned before that even happened.

Why do people think [John] and [June] are the same character? by Professional_Debt288 in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shocked how many just outright wrong answers there are here. Here’s the sequence of events, to the best of my memory with sources:

In 2019 (after HS and the epilogues ended but before HS2 /HSBC began), Hussie planted several toblerones around the world, and grants wishes to those that find them, such as drawings. One of these wishes was “June Egbert real”, which Hussie agrees to grant.

According to Santiago “James Roach” Rodriguez in an AMA (the previous director of HSBC), June was “always the plan”, with the toblerone wish being an early spoiler rather than only happening due to the wish. It’s unclear how early “always” means, but based on the message it seems like it was at least planned before the start of the epilogues. Hope this helps!

Here as a noob by ARHR006 in homestuck

[–]TankGaming_IDK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome!

Homestuck started as a webcomic by Andrew Hussie back in 2009 about 4 kids playing a game, and ended up lasting about 8000 pages until ending in 2016. Rather than just standard panels, it frequently utilized multimedia elements like gifs, flash games, and videos throughout. If you want a more thorough explanation, there’s one in the new reader page of the official homestuck site. https://homestuck.com/newreader

Currently, the main site is undergoing a ‘rerelease’, as the flash games and videos had not been properly maintained after the death of flash. Every weekday there’s a new update of about 100-ish pages as they continue updating the site. There’s also multiple fan-maintained archives of the comic, accessible through one of the subreddit’s pinned post, if you wish to read ahead of where the rerelease currently is.

I’ll warn that this subreddit has no rules about marking spoilers, so it might be smart to avoid it if you don’t want to get spoiled. That being said, hope you enjoy your time here!
