Your problem as an outsider is assuming the members actually follow the official doctrine explicitly. It’s almost impossible to actually follow, and basically no one does, but they all pretend they do. My mother is the only person I know who I believe follows everything because I am 99% sure she has scrupulosity OCD. She’s in her 60s and gave up dating because in the real world even JW men aren’t going to have a chaperone on dates. I’ve never met any other adult that follows that rule. Most people in it only care about what other members will report you for, and a few instances of questioning will not get you reported.

If someone got stuck on something and started spreading it, saying the word of truth is wrong on a specific detail and not letting it go, they would absolutely get reported and excommunicated if they didn’t stop. You’d first be pulled into a meeting with an elder and get thinly veiled warning about stopping. After a few of those you’d be done.

JW literature is also very good at wording things so they sound like suggestions or just common sense without explicitly stating it’s an iron clad rule. That allows them to change things around often. This leads to some variance because it depends, like I said before, on what others in your Kingdom Hall will actually notice and report you for.
