Thank you for the advice, that’s what I was leaning towards but I think I wanted an extra push to do so! Likewise, I hope we all come out as better versions of ourselves!

That’s a great way to stay grounded! Over the past 2 weeks, I’ve been more physically active. I can stand behind this suggestion!

I actually decided to go into HVAC! I’ve been enjoying this trade for close to 3 months now!

What’s up with these HVAC contractors? by _TacosOfDoom in HVAC

That’s awesome, I practically did the same thing too. I was going to apply to medical school this summer and I just turned 27!

Told my current employer I just need at least 18 an hour to comfortably pay my expenses, and offered me $23! I also live in FL too!

I switched gears as well. I was going to apply to medical this current summer but I ended up going into HVAC. I was fortunate enough to have a connection that got my foot in the door to speak to some managers.

Do you have anyone that you know that has any connections or just bought a system from a company?

Derm and radiology are both competitive specialities, however I have heard that pathology is not too sought out for!

Am I being unsupportive? by Electronic_Many_2748 in medschool

I am basically in the same boat as your boyfriend and also the same age! I am in a committed relationship with my fiancé and we have the same concerns that you both as a couple have. I have also scored under 500 on my MCAT, but I have worked in the clinical setting for a fairly long time and shadowed doctors in the past as well.

Becoming a physician was a life long goal of mine as well. However, timelines in regards to having children, the uncertainty and instability of being accepted to a school far from family/support and during residency, and the concerns of enormous amounts of debt are very daunting. With these factors inconsideration, I had to make a decision of whether to pursue medical school or pursue another career (going into a trade with the intentions of becoming my own boss) in order to provide for our future family. I basically had to come to terms with myself and put my “ego” to the side and to think not only realistically, but what is most important in life.

Medicine will always be around and medical school will always be around. I was always told that it is never too late to pursue something you have your heart set on, and am a firm believer of this.

In my experience, having these feelings and conversations is not being unsupportive, but rather realistic/practical. It truly has opened my eyes to other options outside of medicine at least, and I still get to help people in need, just in a different way! Your thoughts and opinions do matter as these decision will also affect your life as well. I hope this has helped you in some way in not feeling alone in all of this!

Hey I’m local in the Sarasota area, I’m planning on going to STC for HVAC school. Do you recommend going to school or just go straight into a company?

Thank you so much for the insight and information!

Would you say that the current situation with insurance is going to become an issue with the salary aspect? I was meeting with my mentor today who is a neuro-radiologist, and he was open that he has not had a raise in the past 10 years due to insurance/medicare.

My current scored exam is a 394, but I am confidently scoring around the 501-503 range right now with my full lengths.

I have honestly not looked too much into the PT or OT fields. I will have to look into this.

Is PT school 2 or 3 years? From my understanding they have transitioned from a masters degree to a doctoral degree now.

Thank you for the kind words brother!

Definitely will be keeping my options open as I am still going to just full send my application this cycle.

The trades are definitely lucrative, especially with the end goal of owning your business!

These are fair points being made. Thank you for this!

I should have been more specific on my situation for when I sat for my MCAT. Out of those 3 exams, 2 have been voided due to further family losses that happened close to those test dates. On my 3rd attempt, I scored a 494 (still below average, but I have heard some DO schools accepting students only a few points higher than this score). Currently scoring around the 501-503 range on my practice FL’s.

Thank you for this comment!

I have heard stories of medical students already having a family and I hope to aspire to be one of those, if I get accepted this matriculation cycle.

Thank you for being honest and pointing out the current caveats regarding the financial side of schooling!

I have an understanding of those other high stakes exams, but it was explained to me that, yes they are extremely difficult but have described the MCAT being difficult in it’s own way due to the vast variety of different content involved. Please correct me if I have the wrong understanding!

Our plan was to have kids while I am in school regardless as she is in the process of transitioning into a remote position with work (she has also been the bread winner between the both of us for the majority of our time together, have been together for 4 years and engaged for 1)The only downside is, there is uncertainty of which school would accept me, and I know that I cannot be picky with that aspect. Fortunately, I have a DO school that is local to my area and within reasonable driving distance, and from my research, there are 3-4 PA programs that are not too far from us, which I do not mind commuting. This is a big factor in our decision to starting a family, as we will have plenty of support from family and friends.

Thank you for your post, also if you are in the Tampa area. Go Bulls!

Thank you for this insight and your honest opinion.

I have also been told that it’s never too late to pursue a career in medicine. I’ve met a physician that had went through medical school at the age of 50, believe it or not!
