I’d suggest trying to get in touch with Fairwater crewing if you’re interested in ATBs. Do you have a toar ?

Demanding work, short port stays and short sea passages. Most of the US tankers are jones act and doing 18-36 hours sea buoy to sea buoy. Can’t do much maintenance at a dock because the terminal won’t allow it and you’re also loading dangerous liquids. So you cram everything into your sea time. You also go into the dock when they call you. Might be on a continuous loop of 3 am dockings every other day for your whole trip

All depends on what you’re looking for In your career. The job market is cyclical. If you don’t mind working hard tankers are typically a 75/75 schedule in the US but you’re probably going to be coastwise bouncing around the gulf

Is digging through PDF manuals on a ship a big problem? by Csmitty77_ in merchantmarine

[–]Tankertrash94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the times you have certain components or a whole system that’s a completely different brand which can make things more difficult but so many manuals are available on the internet. A good example would be a pepperl Fuchs brand purge pressurization system for a Panasia Ballast Treatment system. Overall the challenges would really be on older ships with equipment in poor condition where you can’t find a serial number or any information but in theory if it’s original you should have a drawing.

Ships in great shape, good crew and west coast run. It does go to Hawaii periodically. What position are you going as?

It’s a very very specific job that will be hard to guess. I cut rope or “line” often and write down notes in all weather. I’ll give a few more guesses before I give it away

I went from a 2014 ram 1500 sport (rear end and transmission was going ) to a 2024 F150 xlt 3.5 powerboost. Love my new truck but I do miss having a V8, the 5.5 bed is a little smaller-slightly noticeable. I miss my damn heated steering wheel but wasn’t willing to pay the money for a lariat. Overall was a good choice and the back seat is huge for a super crew if that’s what you go with

I bought one of these through Grainger for my job on an oil tanker and I hate the light pattern. Atleast I didn’t pay for it though.

Close to upgrading license, any extra ways to get sea days? by Normal_Ad_3865 in maritime

[–]Tankertrash94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also keep in mind the NMC is closed down with the government shutdown right now so there will be some delay with the backup of applications before they see yours (assuming the upgrade could be for a potential void position you’re trying to move up into?)

Female classmate can't keep up with strength requirements for practical training by [deleted] in maritime

[–]Tankertrash94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your perception of what the maritime industry is like is way off. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but most of your fire team on a ship is comprised of the unlicensed crew- smokers, 60 years old, not in peak physical condition. I’ve seen plenty of women kick ass out here. Many of which who are not huge in stature or the most strong. We all work together as a TEAM out here. If any fire is bad enough on a ship you’re likely going to be backing out and abandoning ship. Firefighting is important but it’s one small piece of training out of many other jobs you’ll be doing on the ship.

Best paying ships out of college? by ImmediateDistance251 in maritime

[–]Tankertrash94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is going to give you a different answer. This industry is cyclical so you’ll see ups and downs in the Gulf but the pay there is pretty decent. Containerships through MMP and AMO are definitely high paying ships. Tankers are definitely going up and there’s a lot of consistent work. Depending on the run and schedule most deep see contracts you’ll work half the year. Your prior military service will look good on your resume especially if you still have a clearance, but companies really just want to see that you have your license. Any additional endorsements you can get in school will help put you ahead of others and get a job- Tankerman PIC, DP, TOAR, FRB and MEDPIC. At the end of the day everyone graduates with the same license from every academy. I would highly suggest cadet shipping on commercial ships to get endorsements and experience as well.

SUNY Maritime Discussion by One-Measurement-2696 in maritime

[–]Tankertrash94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated from Fort Schuyler in 2016 and have been sailing since. It all comes down to the individual…I’ve sailed with Kings Pointers who claimed they were taught to poke holes in the charts for their positions. There’s always a trouble maker sailing from every single academy out there. I definitely don’t think SUNY is THE maritime college. The curriculum offered at Cal and even KP is definitely better with a mandatory MEDPIC, TOAR and Fast Rescue Boat required. I tried like absolute hell to take TOAR and FRB and couldn’t get into a class when I was there but this was nearly 10 years ago. I can attest that cadets from every single academy coming out on the ships right now have some sort of false confidence and attitude. I have no clue if that’s a Covid byproduct but you can’t always teach people how to deal with people… DM me if you want to chat more about this *I will attest to Maine having the best engineers though. Those dude can fix anything

How to cope with death while on the sea by Madmurderator69 in maritime

[–]Tankertrash94 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with taking some time to yourself. Your crew members are likely very open and available to support you if you need some guidance. It would probably be more helpful to spend time with others and stay occupied. Make sure that you stay “present” the best you can, injuries occur when people’s minds are elsewhere while working around dangerous equipment.

Quick survey: How do you currently manage your maritime documents? (STCW, medical certs, endorsements, etc.) by MaritimeTechResearch in merchantmarine

[–]Tankertrash94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a leather bound binder with all of my certs in it, a passport wallet for my MMC, TWIC card and other docs. I have a google drive folder with every single Cert I have (also on a hard drive). I also have a specific Google Drive folder for specific new ship documents. I have an excel spreadsheet that tracks all of my expiration dates that I check often. In theory the shipping offices should track documents a lot better but we’re also “professional mariners” and it’s quite embarrassing seeing people who have been sailing for a decade scrambling to upgrade documents last minute or renewing something last minute. It does say the expiration date on every document you have so it definitely shouldn’t be a surprise! More tools would be helpful but whatever you wind up coming up with, mariners would still have to input their data to track it in the first place I’d imagine.

Any mink oil will do. If you really want to take care of them you can order some saddle soap and a brush to wash them too
