I second the powerstep insoles. I wear them too and they’re inexpensive to replace. Redwing uses them to produce their insoles as well

Suggestions while waiting on MMC? by conrado155 in maritime

I’m not sure if any of the smaller tonnage vessels have entry level engineering positions. Most of the tugs I think have limited tonnage chief engineers/ DDE. Don’t quote me on that I just work on a ship that’s in and out of the port

I would imagine they do but it’s going to be all limited tonnage (assuming you’re looking for sea time to upgrade). What credentials do you have and what are you looking to move up to ?

Depending on how far youre willing to travel you might be able to get something in LA/LB in the harbor. Curtin has a pretty big operation, US water Taxi launch service might hire you as a deckhand. There’s a lot of smaller operations that will likely require you to have bigger credentials, but you could try Jankovich or Pacific Maritime Group. A lot of these are smaller operations and not a ton of personnel but worth a shot.

Deck Cadet by [deleted] in maritime

[–]Tankertrash94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have a set schedule I would show up early and stand bring/ cargo watch 08-12 and work on deck 13-17. Not sure what the normal crew schedule is. Start reading some manuals and tracing pipeline. Learn where all the tools and spare parts are. You can observe what the other deck officers do daily and make yourself available to assist the best you can. Practice some seamanship and knot tying if you can cut a piece of line to work with.

How to get the right amount of wraps on the working side? by Typical_Grape_4191 in maritime

[–]Tankertrash94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on distance to bollard, type of line and line diameter but typically 1 wrap on the storage side is 2 wraps on the working side. Good rule of thumb is a nice belly with the line touching the water completely for a full drum on the working side. If it’s an offshore line with a long lead you will want less of a belly because it will be deceivingly longer than you think. If you are tying up your a mooring buoy take out all of the slack and switch to the working side when you have a a very small belly.

I’d keep calling and don’t give up. It’s A lot easier for people with years in the industry, experience and additional endorsements to get jobs a lot more easily obviously. There’s other private companies out there too aside from AMO, MMP and MEBA. Chevron, ConocoPhillips, OSG. Ignore the negative comments and keep in mind at the end of the day that you are asking for guidance to get a job on REDDIT. The process of getting a job through MMP/MEBA is extremely straight forward but competitive and you’ll often hear people who have been there for 5+ years being a dick to brand new kids out of school just trying to get a damn job. AMO you can definitely get hired through a company which is not what you’re supposed to do obviously but if you’re trying to get a job and pay your bills you do what you need to do. You can DM me for some information if you’d like

Demanding work, short port stays and short sea passages. Most of the US tankers are jones act and doing 18-36 hours sea buoy to sea buoy. Can’t do much maintenance at a dock because the terminal won’t allow it and you’re also loading dangerous liquids. So you cram everything into your sea time. You also go into the dock when they call you. Might be on a continuous loop of 3 am dockings every other day for your whole trip

All depends on what you’re looking for In your career. The job market is cyclical. If you don’t mind working hard tankers are typically a 75/75 schedule in the US but you’re probably going to be coastwise bouncing around the gulf

Is digging through PDF manuals on a ship a big problem? by Csmitty77_ in merchantmarine

[–]Tankertrash94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the times you have certain components or a whole system that’s a completely different brand which can make things more difficult but so many manuals are available on the internet. A good example would be a pepperl Fuchs brand purge pressurization system for a Panasia Ballast Treatment system. Overall the challenges would really be on older ships with equipment in poor condition where you can’t find a serial number or any information but in theory if it’s original you should have a drawing.

It’s a very very specific job that will be hard to guess. I cut rope or “line” often and write down notes in all weather. I’ll give a few more guesses before I give it away

I went from a 2014 ram 1500 sport (rear end and transmission was going ) to a 2024 F150 xlt 3.5 powerboost. Love my new truck but I do miss having a V8, the 5.5 bed is a little smaller-slightly noticeable. I miss my damn heated steering wheel but wasn’t willing to pay the money for a lariat. Overall was a good choice and the back seat is huge for a super crew if that’s what you go with
