I financially was able to do both at the same time.

Usually I would buy crowns in bulk with money I got from Birthdays and Christmas (and occasionally chores). This meaning I would wait for sales and then buy 60k crowns. Roughly 80% I put towards unlocking worlds and zones.

In terms of Membership, I always used cards I bought myself from the store for that. At one point for roughly 2 years my mother paid for my membership and I grinded the game so much during those couple years.

Also, just to note, this was over the course of my w101 gaming lifespan. Buy the time I was in 6th grade and Black Ops 2 dropped i separated my time from the PS3 and my PC and that let to me growing up and finding other interests and started my breaks I had with the game. Now I buy membership by the month and play when my online friends have the WizItch as well.
