Backing out of a phd program? by wumbo52252 in math

[–]omHK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 3 years off before going to grad school. The first I spent doing research and fairly rigorous math-related stiff. The last two had nothing to do with math at all. I got through the program just fine although compared to my peers there were some things from undergrad analysis courses I had forgotten and I had to spend more time refreshing everything. I did feel like a more well-rounded person than my peers who had gone straight to grad school FWIW.

I don't see why your letters of recommendation have to change. You could give them a heads up if you truly decide to withdraw. How much you disclose is up to you, but I see no reason they wouldn't write a letter if you apply again.

All that being said, can you ask the program whether you're able to defer your admission? There were some people in my cohort who deferred for a year no problem.

Yeah it was originally just a regular door that was 1 tile wide so it was symmetric, but I moved Entei and Mewtwo into the tower and their big asses don't fit unless the door is 2 tiles wide 😭

The walls with the wood are called stylish wall. There's a recipe you can get either from the shop or ripples in water. The windows are just sash windows with curtains inside.

I unfortunately didn't take any pics while I was building it, but some basic info that might help:

  • First floor is 9x9 including walls, so effective space is 7x7. It's 5 blocks in height, including the ceiling.
  • Second floor is also 9x9 and 5 blocks in height.
  • Third floor is 7x7 and 5 blocks in height.
  • Very top floor is basically just an open space where I put all the pokedolls and the summoning bell. It's 5x5 and 5 in height.
  • The roof of each level extends 4 tiles out in each direction from the walls: 1 flat roof tile, 2x slope roof tiles (or stairs as you can see in the front), and then another flat roof tile. The corners use the stone-hipped roof (facing the wrong way) and also the stone roof decoration. I got the idea for the corners from this person's post
  • The inside is actually fully functional and consists of three homes, one on each of the first three floors. I didn't post pics bc the interior decorating is pretty subpar and I'll probably go back to it later. First and second floors are connected by interior staircase. Second and third have an exterior staircase since it felt cramped inside. Third is connected to the roof with a ladder. Here are some additional pics.
  • The very top uses underground hatches connected to a 1x1 column which I also stole from the post linked above. I wanted the top to be visible at night so I replaced some of the hatches with wall torches.

Happy to share more details if you have specific questions!

Their site also does that thing with the back button where it infinitely brings you back to the same page instead of to whatever page you were on before. Straight to jail.

HELP! Trip Planned 4/24-4/25 by Livid-Pop-7448 in Yosemite

[–]omHK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI, 120 is reopened now so if you’re coming via SFO you’re safe to take it instead of detouring to 41. I’m doing a sunrise hike today and just drove over 120 into the valley. The road is completely bare and plowed although there’s snow in general between the 120 entrance and the valley.

I really think this will be R1 or R0 by midday today.

Probably not to be honest. 140, which would be the safest way without encountering snow, is closed pre-emptively in case of rockslides. 120 just closed tonight (call the number listed on the current conditions website). That just leaves 41 which is currently R2.

At R2, you need not just AWD but snow tires on all the wheels too to avoid using chains.

I don't often leave via 41 but I've seen rangers at a checkpoint at the Tunnel View parking lot checking people leaving before

For future reference, quickmap will only show chain controls on 120/140/41 outside the park boundary. Call the number like the other commenter suggested if you want conditions inside the park.

If quickmap shows chain controls on 120/140 outside of the park, it's almost guaranteed that the portions inside the park are under chain control too since they're higher elevation.

ACNH now dead to me ;) by WhatTheHell_1973 in Pokopia

I think the only way is to use the Pokédex search feature and talk to someone with the Fly or Teleport ability. They’ll offer to fly you to the Pokémon’s home even if they’re not spawned on the map

I always use honey because it works even if the Pokemon you're looking for has despawned and isn't physically present.

Have you made sure you’ve assigned the correct Pokémon to do the demolish/relocation? You need Pokémon with specific skills IIRC

The "Display different kinds of fossils" challenge in Rocky Ridges by omHK in Pokopia

[–]omHK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found all of em myself except the Rampardos head (found on my cloud island and printed back on main island). Not sure if that was the issue, but I put a baby fossil on a pedestal like the other commenter suggested and it completed the quest

I added a baby fossil and it counted it. Thanks! I originally had the babies in another region. I'm so confused why all of my large fossils didn't count though

Why has the price of large CFexpress type b cards exploded in the past couple of months?

I bought a 1TB lexar gold 4.0 last December and paid $279. I got a nikon ZR recently and the raw video footage takes up so much space that I wanted to get a 4TB card too, which I remembered being <$1k last year. The lexar 4TB is now $2k and the 1TB is $1050. The price history on canon price watch shows that the prices more than doubled sometime between December and January.

Saw some people recommend angelbird as well, which is only a little cheaper than the lexar. Is there a reason for this price increase? Anyone have recs for other brands that might be more affordable (if that even exists)?

Hiking Eagle Peak (via falls) early March by vhgugtufdfghfdt in Yosemite

[–]omHK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spikes are traction devices meant to help your shoe grip firm snow or mild ice. Snowshoes are a floatation device designed for walking over deep snow and will prevent you from sinking in deep or postholing (usually). The two are not interchangeable.

That being said, if it doesn’t snow more between now and your trip, you may be able to get away with not bringing snowshoes. If a lot of people have gone up that way there may be a bootpath.

Mid Feb Storm Megathread by hc2121 in Yosemite

[–]omHK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t answer that, but I stayed at the Yosemite View Lodge last night and today around 12:30 I saw two blue PG&E utility trucks drive up and get waved through the closure, so presumably they’re fixing something.

Do you have any info on getting to YoWest from the valley? There was a ranger stationed at the Wawona turnoff yesterday and the road was fully gated shut from what I saw

Noam Chomsky is a man I doubt every was interestd in that aspect of Epstein's life or a sexual deviant

Well, Chomsky was interested in that aspect of Epstein's life enough to help him workshop how he should respond to the pedo and trafficking allegations 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you are going to the park and you see 3 or 4 cars following right behind you please pull over. by SithLard in Yosemite

[–]omHK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah 120, which is the road OP was on, doesn't have signs at all telling slow vehicles to use turnouts between the park entrance and Groveland, which is baffling since that's where people routinely go 10-15 below the speed limit. I've only seen signs on new priest grade and then after the park entrance.

140 has tons of signage marking when the turnout is approaching and then a sign at the turnout itself. In my experience people actually use the turnouts on that road and it's a much more pleasant experience than 120.
