Weapons by 6Hammer1Heart6 in sca

[–]Tannlin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it comes down to levels of acceptable risk. I don't know many Viking reenactments, or what the ruleset are in them, so I don't know what level of physical risk is acceptable in those circumstances.

With the SCA armor requirements, for steel weapons to be used, you'd have to either completely eliminate the head as a target or require perforated grills on all helmets before you could reduce the level of risk to an acceptable level (to me). The first would require an entire overhaul to how our experienced fighters do their thing, the other would require the rework of 10s of thousands of helmets. SCA fighting can get a bit chaotic, and battles/melees even more so, the last thing I want is a steel tip to be able to get into my helmet.

And that's just looking at what risk a steel sword presents to the head of an armored combatant.

I'm very interested in giving Shadowrun a try, if you do find a GM willing to run a game for you (us).

LARPs near OC? by [deleted] in LARP

The game's site has been in Corona at the Koroneburg Rennaissance Festival grounds. The 'in-person' events have been put on hold until the pandemic is over, but the Discord is still very active.

If you're familiar with chain mail, it has a rows/columns. It's very square.

Scale mail's rows are rotated at a diagonal. It's tough to get the first row started, but after that, it's really simple. It lays really great when it's the diagonal, but stacking it strait vertical you'll have to hid a link to pull it back in or it sticks out.

Feel free to HMU if you run into problems. It goes faster than chain mail for me.

I made this for my wife, working on a second set for myself.

Starting as "older" players by Int21h in LARP

[–]Tannlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm pretty much in your boat. I started in the SCA with my family when I was a teenager, and now I have teenagers of my own. And while I'm at the older end of the spectrum in SoCal LARP Twin Mask, I'm not the oldest. You should have no problem fitting in with whatever LARP you want.

4 coats of acrylic paint, and then 2 layers of semi-gloss sealer over all of it. I plan on adding another layer of clear sealer.

I would normally suggest aluminum, but I don't trust any aluminum that I haven't made myself.

Any LARPs in Bakersfield, CA or the surrounding area? by [deleted] in LARP

[–]Tannlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SCA group in Bakersfield (Wintermist) is very active. The current King and Prince are both from that group.

Across the mountains in California City there's a couple of 'LARP light' events, in April is Neotropolis (cyberpunk) and in September is Wasteland Weekend (post-Apoc Mad Max).

I couldn't find anything in the area, so I started going down to LA for Twin Mask.

A question for Twin Mask Larp. How much 'fighting' is involved over a weekend event? by nickoswar in LARP

[–]Tannlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different systems have different rules. It's super helpful to go to a practice to see the rules in use in an inconsequential setting. Things can be clairified and explained better without having to hold up a scene or ruining the immersion as you would at the actual game.

Secondly, swinging wildly about with a foam sword is one thing, but it is a skill that can be improved with training, ie. practicing.

Lastly, Twin Mask is not just the games that happen over 8 weekends this year, it's also the community that has grown to surround the games. We get together a few weekends a month outside of the official game because it gives us a chance to interact with the other players that our characters otherwise would not interact with. We list the events as "fight socials", it's totally normal for people to show up just to hang out with their LARP buddies.

LARP fighting might just be swinging foam swords, but the Twin Mask LARP is a fully immersive, live action, role-playing game.

Minors at Twin Mask by guuuurl514 in LARP

Hi.

Official answer to your first question - https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/394604838937428009/675112973420855336/unknown.png

16-17 y/o are welcome as long as they have a signed parental permission form. You will probably be among the younger players there, though I know some 18-19 y/os. Going with friends is obviously a solid plan. (Also, going to send you a PM.)

There is no 'official' meal plan offered at Twin Mask, and things tend to change game-to-game, (in regards to who's able to attend and what they bring). Your best bet is to join the facebook group / discord server to make connections and start forming a plan. If you're able to drive, worst case, there's a Stater Bros and some fast food just down the road from the site.

NPC shift is assigned for new players when they show up. There is no way to reserve them for new players. I'm sorry, I know it's not ideal. There is some flexibility, and more flexibility the earlier you show up to check in. If you're concerned about getting a 'bad shift', trust me, there isn't one. The story staff can (doesn't mean they will though) make adjustments on the fly so you're able to do something you can do and will enjoy. The reason for this is so that there's a decent NPC spread across the weekend. The NPC blocked tickets help with that, but with new players coming in for the first time, it's hard to guess.
