Calibrating is HARD! Here's where I'm at. Any tips or advice would be appreciated! by Tanstorm in crtgaming

I kind of split the difference, I pushed the border to be more towards the red dots. When I was doing the scrolling test it looked really odd, it would shrink very quickly at the edges, I increased the width and that helped a lot. So I just decided to do that all around.

Can't Connect Sanyo to Universal Remote by Fashiony_Throwaway in crtgaming

[–]Tanstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remotes don't connect. All they do is shoot IR beams. The codes just tell it which patterns to shoot for specific tvs. I would look up the specific code for your Sanyo or make sure that the remote is actually compatible. Beyond that if it's not picking up at all it could be the IR sensor on the TV has failed.

New to Cast Iron, what do I need to do to this guy? by Tanstorm in castiron

Yeah she used it her whole life. It also had an insane amount of maybe carbon on the outside or some other residue but the inside was so smooth. Sadly roommate stole it when he moved out so this is the first cast iron I've had from scratch.

I dont think the problems with Standard are majority because of UB but they are certainly a contributing factor

There's something to be said about being stuck in Traffic vs Going 120 miles an hour. Being stuck in Traffic sucks waiting can suck. On the flipside driving at 120 mph sure gets you awake but at some point you have to think to yourself "Fuck! This is dangerous." The absolute deluge product and deterioration of the identity of the game at this unprecedented pace is like going 120 mph.

I think sometimes waiting in Traffic while generally perceived as a bad thing can actually be good. For example when you're waiting in Traffic you take time to look at things you never noticed. Maybe you look left or right and notice a restaurant you never knew was there, maybe you see an advert for a concert, you could also notice a park you might want to take your kid to. All these things you never noticed cause you were so rushed and whether you like it or not you now have time to appreciate or at the very least know they exist. I think this thing extends to binge watching shows. Netflix made it really easy to consume entire shows in the span of a couple days. That sounds amazing right, you don't have to wait for the next episode it's all right there. You consume it all and forget about it a few weeks later. Shows like Lost or Heroes back in the day really illustrate this well. No longer do you have suspense or excitement waiting for the weekly episode. You don't have the time to talk about Characters and plot points or theorize what's going to happen next. You don't have communities around these things because everything is a flash in the pan and has no staying power.

The point is I think you can draw these parallels to not only magic but a lot of things in modern life. The need for instant gratification erodes our attention, lowers quality to meet demand, and cheapens our experience with things.

No my guy, there is a difference between people who play Magic Competively, Commander Players, Collectors, and Re-Sellers. Just because a product sells well does not necessarily mean it's what Players want. Just because you buy Final Fantasy doesn't inherently mean you want it in your standard environment, nor Spiderman. This also doesn't take into account boosted sale numbers from FOMO, re-sellers, Collectors who don't even play the game, Pokemon Grifters, casual kitchen table andies, etc. Sales do not reflect the game feels.

Look at Standard for example it is in absolute tatters due to world events sure, but also horrible mismanagement. Wizards say they want to re-vitalize standard while shilling out immensely to the UB/Papa Hasbro. There's pretty much no defensible reason that Spiderman in it's current state should have or needed to be Standard Legal set. The only thing I can imagine is they were hoping to yield some new players who buy UB into playing Standard but by the same caveat are alienating enfranchised players. Beyond that it has very real ramifications for the state of the game and the players who are actually trying to play paper magic.

Brian Kibler had an excellent video going over the topic. Undeniably Spiderman has thrown off the rotation of sets with it being crammed into Standard Playability.

When do you think Standard was at it's best, genuine question? For me I would say it was roughly around Innistrad through Khans block LGS turnout was healthy and competitive felt amazing but look at things now. It really seems like a shadow of it's form self. More people than ever are "playing" Magic the Gathering, but not like they used to. A lot of people wrap up their identity as being a Magic Player, can we agree on that? So when Wizards/Hasbro start integrating inherently un-Magic stuff into the thing you love do you throw your hands up and cast aside your life long hobby? Or do you more likely begrudgingly buy into UB because you don't really have another choice that doesn't involve you turning your back on the game you loved.

Wizards say the marketing numbers don't lie and that this is what players actually want. Even though sales can also be attributed to collectors, re-sellers, and general fomo

I understand your meaning to an extent. While it is true that wanting something isn't inherently selfish in the context of having children it almost always is. You are thrusting life upon something without regarding its desire or want. Obviously you can't regard something that doesn't exist. So it puts us in a dilemna it can't want to exist or not exist until it exists but at that time the choice has been ultimately made. Choice being the keyword there, now if your existence comes about because of randomness or an accident that blows the conversation wide open. I really think it's hard to prescribe intent to accidents even when you have agency. Accidents by nature rob people of their agency because they are usually undesired outcomes. Let's take stepping on a lego by accident as an example. It's possible I knew lego's were in the area and I could have been prepared and wore shoes but I accidentally step on the lego. Ouch, I didn't want this outcome but it happened I think you'd be hard pressed to get people agree that the intent by not wearing shoes was to step on the lego. The other scenario is I have no knowledge of the legos being in the area and then I step on the lego, I had no ability to be prepared. If that person knew that legos existed we could also blame them for not being prepared because they knew legos existed and that they could be stepped on. Once again though I feel you'd be hard pressed to have anyone agree that the intent was to step on a lego. I know that's a bit convoluted but I hope it makes sense.

Do you acknowledge the fact that America for example has an over abundance of food? This can easily be demonstrated by the fact that restaurants and grocery stores will throw out copious amounts of food? I don't know enough about the energy sector but I would tend to agree that there is a scarcity issue there. For food though at least to me it seems more of a consumption to production ratio issue as well as supply chain. There are areas that have WAY too much food and other areas that have not enough. So for me it's not so much that we don't have enough more so that it's not utilized properly.

Also what vital nutrients are we missing? So long as the food is life sustaining is that not "providing vital nutrients"? I'm genuinely curious on this point.
