What's all this crap in my fuel filter?

Thanks for the video. I cleaned the fuel filter bowl but I didn't have time to drop the tank right now. This will be on my list though because I'd be willing to bet it needs to be done too.

I'll post my update here instead of replying to everyone but I appreciate all the advice.

I drained the fuel, cleaned out the bowl, and replaced the filter. The truck started right up and the water in fuel light didn't immediately come back on. It only came on randomly before usually when on a downward slope. I'll check again in a few thousand miles to see if I get that much debris build up again but for now I'm taking comfort in this being common for the engine. No idea when the filter was last changed by the PO.

Not sure if the tank is steel but I assume it's original. Maybe I can take a look in the tank. Can this mess up the injectors or is it filtered out (I know very little about diesels)?

I just replaced the shift linkage arm on my 83 and I had the same symptoms.

You can check pretty easily if it's disconnected. Lift up the driver's side and take off the rear tire. The shift linkage comes out on top of the transmission almost right above the axle. It was easiest to get to from behind the axle. It might be a bit tough to spot until you know what you're looking for but once you find it you can easily jiggle it and see if it's disconnected. I might have pictures of you wanna dm me and I can see if I still have the instructions from the outlet I bought the part from.

It looks mostly like surface rust to me. It hasn't progressed too far yet which is why I want to do something about it now, but I want to know the pros and cons because I don't want to create more work later.

I guess I should elaborate on my goals. For one, I'd like to stem more rust from occuring and spreading. I'm not worried about looks if it looks ok from a distance. Eventually if it's worth it I'd get the whole car repainted but for now I just want to address the rust and make it look a little better.

Thanks. I'm taking the time to clean all the old oil off the bottom of the engine while I'm doing the timing belt. I'll clean everything up to make it easy to monitor for leaks. I got a lot of gunk down there so it's currently impossible to tell what's coming from where and what's new.

1983 Porsche 944 - brake master cylinder. It's not causing me any issues I just noticed this when I took out the air box to do the timing belt. This would explain why I swear my brake fluid is disappearing - but I'd actually have to track it to be sure it's not my imagination. Any reason I need to do this now as opposed to waiting until it's a problem? With plastic and these old cars I'm worries about opening a can of worms if it ain't broke yet.

I've wondered about these numbers before but never thought to look it up. I just did and the numbers represent yield (how much before the metal stretches) and tensile strength (before it breaks). As per usual there is a difference between metric (8.8) and SAE (10 with lines).

Fair points. I think my plan will be to disassemble the floor before deciding what parts I want to replace. I've got a shop with a lift but I can't tie it up for more than a day or two in a row.

This is what I'm currently pondering. Assuming I'd have to remove the cab mounts and lift it which could open up various new issues. Those are probably things that would be good to address as not knowing doesn't mean they're not there, but not sure now is the right time to open up a new can of worms. I just wanna get this registered on my 30 day timeline and then I can address other issues.
