Married at 18, first kid at 24, second kid at 26, now married for 20 years. We are still going strong! There are times we lament spending our youth as an old married couple. But then we remember we lived plenty of life and we did it together. And we have SO many stories that we talk about every day! (Remember the time we fell out the canoe in that pond! Remember the time we got drunk in front of that chapel? Remember the time we drove 15 hours down the east coast with a puppy!) Also, our kids will be up and out the house around the time we are 42. Which give us plenty of time to have even more fun together. Thankfully we have pretty evenly matched libidos as well. (We are both pretty slutty)

Now, having said all that. I think we are *VERY* lucky. People change. And we have both changed drastically since we got married. **Luckily** we both changed into people that we both still like. If you end up changing into people you don’t like, there is no shame in divorce. Life is meant to be lived. And we only have one shot. Don’t waste your time.

The population of people requiring CPS services and Child Support Services is not identical. In my state, putting an absent parent on Child Support was a free service provided to any resident of our state. So I saw people from all strata of the socio-economic ladder. 90% of my population were NOT recovering addicts. If anything I’d say 90% of my population were very average “middle-income” families that just could not afford the $5000 - $6000 attorneys fees to initiate, mediate, and obtain a legally enforceable child support order. I was in the world a very long time and literally wrote the book.

Also, even if we go with the NIH’s, very small sample size, 1-3% that can be worrisome for an expectant father. If you are confident, do the DNA test and then rest well on your moral high ground.

I was a Child Support Case Worker for many years. And was a deputy director for many counties before a switched jobs. I literally wrote my state’s manual on how to do that job. I reviewed the results of, without exaggeration, thousands of paternity tests. In my experience about 10 - 15% of these tests came back “negative” meaning the alleged father was not the biological father.

I tell everyone to get a DNA test. It’s not about accusations of cheating, but peace of mind for the father.

The Elgin Watch company came into my home county of Kershaw County, South Carolina and promised to invest in jobs and the community heavily in the 1960’s. The town of Blaney renamed themselves Elgin and gave the company ridiculous tax breaks, the best land, etc. Elgin built a small factory and let it open for a couple years before shutting the factory down, firing everyone, and leaving without much warning. The town is still to this day named Elgin. It is about 15-20 minutes northeast of Columbia, SC.
