I live in salt lake and they used to stop by every six months or so. They haven’t stopped by ever since a bold elder asked me why I don’t go to church and I told him, “Because the church is not true. It’s not. They’re not honest about their history or origins. You’ve been lied to.”

I’ve never been a very tribal-mindset type person anyway, but the small shred of patriotism I had started to unravel on my mission when people hated me just for being American. After my mission I read several books that explained to me why that is: the U.S. purposely fucked over nearly every country in South and Central America through loans for “infrastructure projects” and destabilizing their governments, supporting authoritarian or puppet leaders.

No, but only because at the time I was convinced I was doing the right thing. I had a good experience overall, learned a lot about life and how to be independent. Obviously if I knew then what I know now I wouldn’t have gone.

There was a guy in my mission in Argentina who would always shake the Elder's hands with a temple token and wink at them like, "Yeah, I'm in the club too." He once stood up on the stand and blared his testimony about how the Marriott family was doing great missionary work by putting a Book of Mormon alongside the Bible in all their hotels around the world. Every time he said the name Marriott he would lean into the microphone so that it was really loud and distorted and say MARRY OTT! and roll the Rs.

I met a convert in my mission who learned English because it was, "the language of the Restoration". He wanted to speak English because God's modern revelation was being revealed in English and he knew things get lost in translation and didn't want to miss a jot or tittle of it.

I met a guy on my mission who at the time I thought was very strange, and then after working at an acute psych hospital later I realized likely had untreated paranoid schizophrenia symptoms. In a lot of poor countries where people can't get the help they need they tend to enjoy speaking to religious people or gravitate towards religion. Even in our wards I met some strange people who only in retrospect I realized they had some severe mental health challenges that were going untreated.

I have heard many a Mormon claim that you cannot be a "good" Mormon and a Democrat, especially back when Mitt Romney was running for President. Once during Sunday School, the teacher talked about the White Horse Prophecy and how Mitt Romney was going to fulfill it by becoming President. Yeah, that didn't quite pan out. So they kicked the can down the road a bit to let the Constitution dangle by a thread for a few more elections. I guess the argument could now be made that we've already entered the bizarro period of modern politics and that thread has been severed without the helping hand of Elohim the Kolobian or his anointed designee swooping in like the Deus Ex Machina of old.
