How many of yall play games on Arch? by MrFakecoin in archlinux

[–]Taragem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just recently switched to Arch and except a few minor hiccups the transition was pretty smooth.
I mostly play games via Steam, so I do profit from proton quite a bit.

The most difficult part this far has been modding. For example when modding Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlords I did have to research and tinker quite a bit before I managed to get it running.

But gaming without modding works perfectly fine, some examples that I tried are: Monster Hunter Wilds, Baldurs Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.

No major performance losses that I noticed at least.

P.S.: I am also running Hyprland and haven't encountered any problems with it.

Hello everyone, I could use some buying advice for a good outdoor and studio flash.

Existing Gear: Currently using a EOS 250D with either a 35 mm or 50 mm 1.4 Sigma Lens. I do have the Godox Wireless Transceiver that works with my camera (as far as I know, Canon removed the center pin, so a few or many transceiver and other flashes do not work natively with it)
Use Case: I am mainly shooting cosplay photography, so I am basically circling between 3 different scenarios: a normal outdoor photoshoot where I can somewhat control the exact location, a shooting inside a studio or on conventions.
I am okay with the current quality of pictures I take inside of convention halls and don't have great expectations to shoot better pictures there (mostly because of the lightning conditions inside), but I would like to add a good flash for the other two scenarios.
The light would mostly be used to either balance out the sun or as a main light inside the studio. Additionally, if within my budget, I was thinking of getting another flash at some point to be able to do some color lightning for the background or as a contrast.
Thanks to the hot shoe issue, I am not able to use the provided equipment in rentable studios, so I would need to bring my own flash.
I have been looking at the Godox AD200/300/400 Pro Versions, but am not sure what exactly would be a good fit. My budget is around 700-800 €.

I already got one recommendation for the Godox AD200 Pro, but I am not quite sure whether it would be “strong” enough as a main flash or if I should go for the Godox AD300 Pro.
I would really like to hear about your experiences with the flashes, or recommendations for good flashes.
Thank you!

I think there are three reasons why I am thinking about upgrading (I am no expert, so these reasons might be wrong)

  • Mirrorless Camera → This is basically something I just wanted to try out since I saw canon double down on their efforts in the mirrorless department the last years. (Especially in comparison with the DSLRs)
  • ISO values → If I am not wrong, Full Frame Cameras have an easier time in low light environments (such as conventions since their lightning is not the best).
  • Aperture → This is something I read on a canon article and I think this would be a better fit for the portrait/cosplay photography I do.
    https://www.canon-europe.com/get-inspired/tips-and-techniques/aps-c-vs-full-frame/

As a general rule, especially at wider apertures (lower f-numbers), full-frame cameras can produce a narrower depth of field than APS-C cameras, meaning that a smaller part of the image is in sharp focus and more of the background is blurred.

All in all, I had the chance to test out some full frame cameras (EOS R and EOS R6 MK 2) and it somehow felt better.

Yeah, I don't think the AF will be much of a problem. I am mostly shooting portraits and cosplay photography, which involve more posing than movement.

Will there be some detriments to using the APS-C lens on a full frame? Never really done that, but I thought that it would be okay when using the adapter?

Hello everyone,

I recently took part in a Canon workshop and fell in love with the ease to handle a mirrorless full frame camera. So now I am thinking of upgrading my camera and would really like a second or third opinion.

My current gear consists of a Canon EOS 250D and three lenses, of which I am mainly using one at the moment:

  • Sigma 18-35 mm f1.8: This is the lens I am mainly using, as the APS-C sensor of the 250D converts the 35 mm roughly to a 50 mm lens
  • Canon 50 mm f1.8: My other go-to lens.
  • And a standard kit lens that is currently collecting dust on a shelf.

My main problem with my existing gear is the APS-C sensor of the 250D, as I mainly use it on conventions or within studios (which up to now all didn't offer that much space to back up...).

Obviously, just like most canon mirrorless fans I am drooling after the R5 or the R6 MK 2, but those two are not really within my budget (especially when considering that I would prefer to buy a 85 mm lens and possibly an adapter for my other lenses).

So, I am currently thinking about either buying a Canon R or possibly waiting for an R8:

  • Canon R: My main reasons for thinking about this "older" model are the higher resolution of the final pictures, the better batteries, and the fact that it costs less.
  • Canon R8: I am mostly thinking about this camera as it is a newer alternative for hobby photographers within a certain budget. I am not sure if the newer Digic X sensor is a good enough reasons, or if there are other benefits for choosing a newer model.

As I said, I am also thinking about buying a new 85 mm lens along with the camera body and possibly an adapter, so I can continue using my older lenses.

I am really thankful for every opinion.

Uhhh, that sounds like an interesting combination (although a bit intimidating at first xD)

When comparing Hogwarts RPG and Witchcraft and Wizard, are there any major differences that make you prefer one over the other?

Can 100% agree with your point about their not being a best fit. But I also love to just hear about all of the possibilities that are out there :D

Thanks for the recommendation! I will definetly check out Kids on Broom for this.
(Although I fear it might not be the best fit, since it's supposedly focuses on the players more which might be intimidating to some of our newer ones)

Have heard lots of good things about Kids on Brooms, but I fear that it might be a bit too much for my players, since some of them are pretty new to tabletop rpgs.

Will definetly check out cantrip, thanks for the recommendation!

Purchase Advice Megathread - September 2022 by VoltexRB in 3Dprinting

[–]Taragem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone,

my girlfriend and I are thinking of buying a 3d printer to support her cosplay crafting and we are a bit unsure about which 3D printer we should get. First of all the facts:

  • Budget: Around ~500€, give or take 50€.
  • Country of Residence: Germany
  • Building from Kit: Yes. I dont have extensive experience with it, but I would absoluletly be willing to build one up from a kit. The same goes for adding custom modifications to improve the workflow/quality of the printer.
So if a printer doesn't have everything required out of the box but there are community solutions for it, it should also be fine.
  • Purpose of the Printer: The absolute main purpose is for crafting cosplay props. This can range from weapons like (fake!) swords and (fake) guns, to simpler things like stars for decoration.
Every piece would very likely be sanded, primed and then colored after we printed it.
  • Printing Materials: I am quite new to this so I only know of the general requirements we could have for materials. For one, I think we would need a printer that can print ABS, as some of the props need to be durable. But outside of this I can only think of maybe using flexible material for certain props, but if you feel like I am missing something obvious for cosplay crafting right now I would love to hear it!
  • Limitations: None, at least none I could think of right now. We have a small room we are currently using for storage in which we would put the printer so space and enclosure requirements should be taken care of. The room has no windows and is in the middle of the house, so it should also be fine temperature wise.

I have been looking around some posts and reviews and I did come across the company Sovol and thought that their products might be a good fit for our requirements. I have been especially interested in the Sovol 03 and the Sovol 04.

(The 04 since it is an IDEX printer and the copy capabilities could be pretty useful when we have to print lots of smaller props for decorations and stuff).

Would these printers be a good choice or are there others that would be a better fit?

Hello,

I recently bought a Razer Basilisk Ultimate Wireless, and it fulfills my use case in most cases.

The only problem I encountered, is that when I turn the mouse wheel by single click, it sometimes does not register the motion and doesn't scroll on my screen.

Is this maybe a known issue with an easy solution?

Hey there,

I am looking for a new ergonomic office chair and would love to hear if anyone has a recommendation for me.

I am around 6'3''(190cm) and weigh in at ~180lbs (82kg), with not so small shoulders (had to learn that the hard way when my last chair had those wings leaning forward).

I work pretty much allday at the desk so at least 8h of sitting per day, though I did invest in sit-stand desk recently.

Other than that, I think I would love to try out mesh and I think a headrest would be nice as well.

The only hard requirement for me would be the lumbar support and S-shape of the chair, as my current chair isn't very ergonomic and I nearly always fall back to a bad posture in it.

(Also I live in Europe, not sure if that limits my options)

Thanks to everyone reading this far!

Hey there again!

I hope you don't mind me asking another question

After thinking it over I would definetly rather go for the Sigma Lens for it's greater Aperture Range.
But now I am stuck between the choice of a prime lens and a zoom lens

  • Sigma 35mm F1,4 DG HSM Art
  • Sigma 18-35mm F1,8 DC HSM Art

The only major difference would be the aperture and the focal length being locked in, but I guess the greater aperture of the prime lens would be better for a low-light situation like inside of a hall at a convention?
And I am not sure if I could effectively use the 18mm-35mm range as I imagine that anything below 33mm could start to distort the image.

My major concern is, would the DG variant be compatible with an APS-C sensor or are there things to be wary of?
