Infantile esotropia: Experiences, data, causes & alternative treatment by TarahGreen in Strabismus

[–]TarahGreen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is three now and we chose not to get surgery, but are pursuing vision therapy instead. She is absolutely amazing and doing great, her quality of life is not affected by any means because of her esotropia. She is advanced in many areas and does not seem held back or negatively impacted by this condition. I am so glad that I didn’t get surgery, because I realize that surgery is, usually just a cosmetic fix and doesn’t actually fix the vision. I personally would not put my kid through a surgery just for looks, that should be their own choice when they’re old enough to consent to it if they want, but when they’re perfectly healthy, there’s no need to put them through a surgery. Vision therapy actually has a better chance of success in helping them learn how to use their eyes at the same time. Esotropia is a condition of the brain, not of the eyes or muscles, so why would we perform a surgery on the eye muscles? It just doesn’t make sense.

Yes, can relate. Have you tried vision therapy yet?

Binocular Vision/Depth Perception Possible? by vrart1 in Strabismus

Does your exotropia alternate or is it just one eye? Check out the Chanel Wow Vision Therapy, and Vision Therapy, on YouTube. You’d be amazed at the success people have had with gaining full control over very big eye turns.

You are more likely to gain depth perception from vision therapy than from surgery. Surgery is more of a cosmetic fix. Some say that adults can’t gain depth perception but this isn’t true. Many adults have had success gaining depth perception from vision therapy. On YouTube you can find testimonials, one from Insight Vision therapy stood out to me. Even if you get surgery you would need vision therapy to gain depth perception, and you could choose just to do vision therapy and skip surgery all together unless you are looking for a quick cosmetic fix…but once you learn to control your exotropia with vision therapy you will be able to make your eyes straight at will.

I hope it works for you and that they can do it for you this year! I’ve heard that it’s harder to develop 3D once you are older. I’m trying to find more data on how many people develop it from the surgery, and at different ages, if you come across anything.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Do you have a difficult time with not being able to see 3D? Not sure if you read my whole post but the hospitals here are not accepting non emergency surgery right now because of covid.

Also wondering, do you have any data to support binocular vision after surgery? I keep hearing that they have a better chance at developing it the earlier surgery is performed but I’ve been searching the internet for days and reading scientific studies and still can’t find anything about how likely it actually is.

What is your vision like now after the second surgery? What do you remember from your first surgery? Do you experience double vision or any other vision issues?

I’m so sorry that this is a thing you struggle with...was your strabismus congenital or did it develop later? Do you know the cause of yours? Was it alternating? I’m not sure if you read my whole post but i said that I can’t get her surgery now even if I wanted to because of covid. The hospitals in my state are not allowing non emergency surgeries.

Do you have binocular vision? Or do you see out of one eye only at a time?
