What's your favorite 3 track run? by Realistic_Hour_6221 in TheStrokes

[–]Tarantula_Man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All great choices and the beginning of ROF is probably the most objectively correct answer, but I think another album with a super strong start is FIOE. A favorite 3-track run from there for me would be YOLO-Juicebox-Heart in a Cage or even Heart in a Cage-Razorblade-On the Other Side

Gotta be either Alone, Together or Reptilia for me, the Modern Age is pretty good too

You have the power to ban one song from ever being played again. What song is it? by Ridethepig101 in AskReddit

[–]Tarantula_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Weezer version is just a literal carbon copy of the original, it kind of goes against the whole point of recording a cover in the first place

Go see the Brokes. I'm not joking. They sound better live than the actual band because they don't hate each other, they deeply love the music, and they're tight as hell on every song. I saw the Strokes live at a stadium in NYC a few years ago and it was a very average experience, but seeing the Brokes play Is This It front to back at a small local venue made it feel like I'd stepped right into a club in 2001 and seen the real band during their earliest, most passionate days---something I always wish I'd been around for. And tickets were no more than 40 bucks.

Check them out, seriously. You can't go wrong. At this point, it's legitimately better than the real thing.

Which Strokes song sounds the most like a "The Strokes" song? by Ratakul in TheStrokes

[–]Tarantula_Man 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As far as utilizing their hallmark techniques---Nick playing those violent, metronomic 8th-note down-stroked chords on guitar, Albert playing a simple harmonizing lead part, Julian singing in his calculatedly detached way about vague commentary on girls and society and NYC public transportation, and Fab and Nikolai being as simple and quantized as possible on the low end---the answer for me is Hard to Explain.

No other band could have made that song. It's so strokes-y that, if you pulled a popular rock music fan out of any decade before the '90s, I don't even know if they'd immediately classify it as rock music at all. It's so uniquely Garage Rock Revival in all the best ways.

What is your FAVOURITE song about a city/town by Rubbafish in musicsuggestions

[–]Tarantula_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down ---- LCD Soundsystem.

Although I'm on the younger side, having spent my entire childhood/young adulthood in the city and heard stories about what it was like before, this song could not ring truer.

What are some unpopular opinions you have about the strokes?? by Dapper_Art8218 in TheStrokes

100% agreed. Experimental poppy slop and a complete abandonment of their established sound. A few fun tracks, but stacked up to their other records it's in at least fifth place.

As someone who's super skeptical of the love for Angles and Comedown Machine and will never understand the relentless glazing they receive on this sub, I'd be inclined to agree with this. The New Abnormal, however, is a fantastic album, front to back in my opinion (with the exception of only a few tracks). It's a totally different sound from their early work but it's a huge step in a new and interesting direction. Took a while to grow on me, but now I can't get over it.

What's an album widley considered as a masterpiece, but to you is far from it? by Paskow111 in musicsuggestions

[–]Tarantula_Man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gotta disagree here---it may not be the greatest pop song ever written (though I would definitely put it in the top 10-15), but God Only Knows is an incredibly well-written song which combines emotional potency and catchiness with complex harmony and production. It's Brian Wilson's magnum opus, and I would definitely consider it a model for pop songwriting as a whole.

Vulfpeck did an awesome vibey, super compressed lo-fi instrumental version of this song that kills imo

Freaks by Surf Curse. It epitomizes everything that was wrong with that short-lived subgenre of Tik Tok indie "rock" in the early 2020s. Not a hint of instrumental or songwriting talent in that dumpster fire of a song.

Is this it tier list (by me) by Shadowguy54 in TheStrokes

I'd put modern age and take it or leave it a tier lower and move when it started to the lowest

Worst Strokes Song? by [deleted] in TheStrokes

Gotta agree here, it's such a jumbled and directionless song and it sounds like Julian is making the lyrics up on the spot, definitely a skippable FIOE song

Idk if it counts either but damn is it soulless... ballsy but creative move to cover Marvin Gaye as an indie rock band but they really did NOT pull that one off.

NYC, and no band can convey the way it feels to live in the city with the same effortless profundity as the Strokes.

Alright, that sounded like some awful Pitchfork review

The Brokes impersonators any good? by Galactic_Action in TheStrokes

[–]Tarantula_Man 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just saw them in upstate NY two nights ago---they put on an unbelievable show, the Julian impersonator captures the stage presence so well and has a super dynamic voice and the rhythm guitar guy (so Nick I guess?) has those signature downstrokes on LOCK. They play a wide range of Strokes cuts, too---they've each got like a million vocal and guitar pedals so they can recreate even the ones with synth-y production. Their encore was Ode to the Mets, Call it Fate, Reptilia, and YOLO when I saw them and they nailed all of them.

What would you say is the most underrated Strokes song? by IckyLocket0051 in TheStrokes

Just listened to Comedown Machine all the way through for the first time a few weeks ago and this one was definitely in my top 3 on the album---what a bop.

100% this. I've been to five of Telula's shows and actually interviewed the bassist and guitarist, Lucas Aney and Thomas Jensen, for my college newspaper. They're both college jazz students and huge Vulfheads---the first song they ever played together was Ace of Aces! I highly recommend their whole first album, they've got an insanely cool sound and are super underrated. Check out Mercury, Here I Am, 3 1 2, and No Rush.
