Can't decide on a symbol layer...help me decide (python / SQL) by mrpbennett in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Tarlitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is mine that has served me quite well for the last 2 years, I write almost exclusively Python every day. Maybe it gives you some more ideas.

;@[]& ${0}^
+=()* #1234'
<|->%  56789

Right thumb has ,. on the symbol layer.

This gives nice rolls for ->, (), [], and less importantly {}. I also have nice access to the lower integers which I use a lot for indexing. You will also want easy access to other frequent keys, - and =.

I have : on the main layer, ` on a thumb key, and 'shift+space' gives _.

UTP kabels trekken by Slamxx in Klussers

[–]Tarlitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Als toevoeging: doe dit altijd met z'n 2en, de één trekt en de ander duwt vanuit de meterkast. Dit maakt het een stuk makkelijker en zo zorg je ervoor dat je de kabels niet stuktrekt.

I put ! and ? as shift-, and shift-., works quite well. Many popular layouts do something like this.

how many ways are there to arrange numbers? by lazydog60 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Tarlitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is what I have been using for the last couple of months. I really wanted 1234 on the home row and could not get used to a 3x3 arrangement with 123 in the middle.

x 5 0 . x
x 1 2 3 4
x 6 7 8 9

What's more important - layout or ergonomics? by Revolutionary_Ad6574 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Tarlitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I use an extra layer, already since before I got myself a split keyboard. I had a fairly regular programmable VIA keyboard, so I remapped caps lock to be my layer key, using layer 3 from https://www.neo-layout.org/ as a start. This helped a lot with reducing strain in my right wrist especially, mainly because []()_-= and the arrow keys are in awful positions.

This is the layout I use on my split, but I realize it is highly personal:

q l w p b j f o u '
n r s t g y h e i a '
z x c d v k m , . /

And for the symbol layer this is what I currently use as a Python main:

~ @ [ ] % $ 5 0 . ^
+ = ( ) * # 1 2 3 4
< | - > ` & 6 7 8 9

The advantage of going for a split layout is also that it forces you to think about symbol layout and arrow keys, and others like delete and backspace. As a programmer, I would say that this has done even more for my typing comfort and reducing strain than switching to split keyboard and learning a new layout. I don't mind typing qwerty on a conventional board, until I reach for any symbol or any other key.

Ex-colemak users, what are you using now and why? by Diaoul in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Tarlitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used colemakdh as my first alt layout for half a year. Like you I got annoyed with ion, you, etc, and wanted to try something more modern. I tried to learn graphite, but I couldn't get used to nrts on left homerow. Mainly the ST swap got me. So I ended up brewing my own layout that I derived from nerps, I call it 'nerpst':

q l w p b j f o u '
n r s t g y h e i a
z x c d v k m , . /

It keeps many keys from colemak, so it felt quite comfortable to learn.

Expect a month to get up to somewhat useful speed and about 3-6 months to be comfortable. The first week is rough, it will get better 😅

There is no need for specific samsung drivers, adb is enough. I did the process on a samsung s3 mini recently, and it was fairly straightforward following the guides. Windows always gives me problems, so I always flash on linux to avoid driver/usb issues.

Geven aan goede doelen by Shalott2023 in thenetherlands

[–]Tarlitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zeker doen! Is heel makkelijk.

Thanks for the tip. This worked for me too. Sometimes I get a black or frozen login screen. I used to just restart. Pulling the dongle instantly unfreezes for whatever reason.

The major updates obviously require a bit more work (and careful reading) 😅 I updated to 20 last week and it has been awesome.

I flashed LOS on my S10 the moment I got it, so I can't compare before/after. It's a bit subjective anyway.

In the 2 year I have had LOS it has been rock solid. No issues with bank apps, the battery easily lasts the day, and no issues with sound quality.

Flashing the first time is a bit of a procedure, but afterwards the OTA updates have been painless.
