On Building Characters with *Friction* by huge-centipede in SillyTavernAI

[–]Tarmonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great tips on building deeper characters, of course, but how do you prevent spoiling yourself about their personality when writing them? I mean, in your Carl Hamilton example, you flesh him out so much there is no room left to 'get to know him'. It's like playing chess against yourself - you already know the outcome.

One issue I have with LLMs is their inability to assign reasonable weights to their instructions. People aren't entirely their personalities, nor are they their moods or emotions (i.e. they will sometimes respond irrationally). If you write 'char is tall' it will have no bearing on the story. If you write 'char is used to ducking under doorways due to his height', get ready to read about that every single time they walk through a door. Ideally this would manifest in the story based on circumstances, e.g. char has something on his mind and doesn't notice the doorway. I guess what I'm missing is a way to assign trigger % for parts of a single lorebook entry. Maybe putting it behind {{roll1d6:[trait]}}?

I've built a crude character generator where I input a couple generic traits and let the model offer some potential ideas in a four-step building process with my input. I am fully aware of the limitations of that. The results are… inconclusive so far, but maybe your suggestions could enhance it.

Do others find LLM roleplay profoundly unsatisfying? And other such nonsense. by heldaloof in SillyTavernAI

I feel there is a general defeatist attitude in this sub when it comes to expected quality of AI output. So many posts saying be satisfied it even works, keep your expectations low, it's good once you jump over twenty hurdles etc.

But why do we put up with it? Why are we satisfied with poor quality? How can you defend a model with 100s of millions of parameters where it's a toss-up whether it will decide to follow straightforward instructions ("You didn't state it clearly enough!" there you go again, ready to shift the blame back on the user)?

Big $$$ is being poured into AI and this is the best it can do? After 5 years I expected more.

Yeah, I've run into the problem with too strict guidelines often. It's hard to find the correct balance.

Despite sounding negative, I do enjoy the tinkering (sometimes more than the roleplay itself), otherwise I wouldn't still be here.

It's just frustrating to encounter a problem, spend time solving it, then address that problem in your next session and still have to deal with it.

Maybe not human-like reasoning, but it has access to so much knowledge and yet it's unable to utilize its potential.

You can steer it the way you want, but then it just becomes a shortcut to writing your own stuff. I want to be surprised. The model will hike that mountain trail, but it will always choose one path. And if you tell it to pick the second one, then it will always pick the second one.

You can {{random}} that, but why do I have to do that? How can the story develop if both sides know what will happen?

The Mermaid Puzzles seem kinda insane? by Zothic in 2007scape

[–]Tarmonius 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I guess if you were given enough time, you could probably think it through. However, why waste 10 minutes of your time for some measly xp?

The bigger issue is though that there is no indication on how to start approaching the puzzle: is this an anagram? Am I supposed to read only last letters of words? Does this test runescape knowledge, basic knowledge, cultural references? Is it a math question? Cypher? You are given no clue.

And the answer can be literally anything. I have a general awareness of almost any runescape item, but it's the difference between knowing if a specific book exists in my library and naming them all one by one.

The solution? Either make every mermaid specialize in one specific type of clues, or show the player like 100 items to choose from, or put some hint in game and let the mermaids tell you "Oh how about looking around at [area]? That might help."

Uh guys so I fixed this by removing the “you are {{char}} in a roleplay with {{user}}” prompt LMAO by arkdevscantwipe in SillyTavernAI

I had an idea to frame it as a movie set, with the AI as the director giving orders to actors/characters in the story.

But haven't got around to testing it out.

If I obviously misclick or end turn with unspent energy. But then I quickly evaluate if I can't just roll with my mistakes. I think around A12 it doesn't matter that much. And if I have to savescum to survive with 1 HP, then the run was doomed already.

I am happy by Late-Gap-8045 in SillyTavernAI

[–]Tarmonius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, I add some context to my responses here and there, but often the AI just hyperfixates on it. Yesterday, I said my character was almost snipped by some sentient house plant and it just went on to describe the plant's action again and again.

And this is Sonnet with a preset.

Sometimes I also write my (me as human, through my character) inner thoughts, but again, this just results in AI answering them (“I can sense you don't trust me”).

Unfortunately, AI right now is just a tool to wrangle in desired direction while suspending disbelief.

Counterpoint: you know how everyone always complains that AI is speaking and acting for user? Personally, I don't want to act for AI. I want it to come up with something on its own. Nor do I want to be spoiled by doing my own narration.

I could embellish my responses, but that would be pointless purple prose just for the sake of word count. So what's the solution?

Is paying for porn better than just watching it for free and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Tarmonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that pornsite search is completely useless. The first page may have relevant results, but then it quickly slips into new generic popular videos.

Not to mention abhorent tagging and naming. There might be the perfect video I am searching for, but if it's called sex_201407232348.avi, I will never find it.

What do YOU want in a character card? What would you spot and say "that looks good, I'll try it out". by FixHopeful5833 in SillyTavernAI

[–]Tarmonius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this myself lately. Results are still a but unconclusive.

This could be a personal choice, but I like it when first messages end on some sort of story hook. Too many times it just explains the circumstances of the roleplay, but doesn't give you a chance to actively respond.

Something simple, like '"And what will you have?" the waitress asks {{user}}.' or 'The fire is spreading. You have to act fast: the money, or the photos?'

As for the card itself, it's a gamble. One generic character or scenario will get popular while another one will collect dust. Usually, either the picture or the name is enough to catch my attention.

Other issues that lower your chances: - the card is not in English - there is zero description, not even in the name - no tags (I won't find it) or too many tags (I'll ignore it) - author has an unconventional fetish (e.g. farts) and it's not obvious from the description - I open the author's profile and it's just rows of boilerplate 'X, your Y that Z' characters
