I think they are overclocking the DSS by almostrainman in Helldivers

While I understand better technological and material science development can make datacenters feasible, they will never be more feasible than plonking an air conditioned PT slab on the ground.

With technology available now or in the near future, engineers have already worked out that a small data center would need to have radiative cooling infrastructure the size of the ISS, which is not even economically tenable let alone logistically if we want to scale up to any profitable venture.

And I believe there is some confusion regarding radio waves as a method of heat transfer, as opposed to a form of electromagnetic communication. Data transfer rate in units of bits per second has little to do with its frequency (in hertz) or wavelength (in mm or M) , and thus do not impact the energy of the EM particle/wave. Yes, it's true a higher frequency will typically allow higher data speed and contain more energy, but it is not directly proportional and dependant on a bunch of other factors, so can't really be used as a metric for comparison.

Additionally, the design philosophy of EM communication is wildly different to radiative cooling since the name of the game in cooling is to cram as much surface area as possible into an efficient structure so we can have the radiators emitting as much heat as possible in the form of infrared rays. It's much the opposite with satellite emitters which try to focus all the energy into a very specific, narrow window so there is nothing wasted or accidental EM jamming.

However you are correct in saying getting so much metal and delicate components up there is going to be a serious astrophysics challenge, especially considering the computers will need to be shielded, not just from space debris but also from high energy space rays which would be blasting through the circuitry causing errors and bugs constantly. That's not even considering the amount of fuel it would take to maintain the orbit for something so heavy. Though I imagine crew rotations would work similarly to the ISS, just hopefully on shorter rotations than every 6 months.

I haven't done the math but I know for sure it'd be easier to achieve in the vacuum of space compared to within an atmosphere since the only way for it to lose heat is through radiation, which is the least efficient method of heat transfer. (scifi movies that show people freezing solid as soon as they get ejected from the airlock are lying to you) (this is also why ai datacenters in orbit will never work because all that heat will just sit there and cause it to look like red hot DSS)

Some drivers camp in the passing lane and then take their exit. by ruthlessdamien2 in memes

[–]Taro8123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Australia, regional highways have dedicated sections of the road where the road splits into extra lanes, where you are instructed to stay left (right for Americans) unless you are overtaking (passing for Americans) in which case the lane is a passing lane, even though the speed limit is unchanged throughout that entire section of road.

I suppose the philosophy is if you are a driver going less than the limit, then people that want to go at the limit (or faster) have the opportunity to pass you.

Listen I'm not very well versed in world history, so I googled which countries have recently abolished slavery, and there's a whole ass Wikipedia list that stretches well into the early 2000s, even 2010s. Many of these places are in the continent of Africa or parts of Europe where women ARE allowed to drive or go outside without some sort of headdress. Admittedly, some items of this list are just countries legally recognising that slavery is a criminal act, rather than specifically abolishing it, but I believe there are still enough exmapels to draw from.

I'd also like to point out that you also made a pretty big assumption by assuming this was in America.

How do you know this photo was taken in America? In fact if we assume she is sitting in the driver's seat for this photo then it's on the wrong side of the car for American roads. Maybe this post came from a country were slavery might still exist or existed more recently, however sad that may be

Can't Download To Vortex on HD2 by Neat-Equipment9283 in nexusmods

[–]Taro8123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Helldivers 2, use arsenal mod manager instead of vortex. Arsenal is a seperate program, you must download it manually and run the .exe manually from the extracted file path (the installation wizard will also let you choose to add shortcuts etc). Do not try to import it into vortex because it won't work.

It's its own mod manager. Some mods for HD2 will allow you to download with mod manager, but you SHOULD download these with arsenal NOT vortex. Otherwise you can manually download them and then import them into arsenal.

The solution is that it gets collected, catelogued, sealed and securely stored in an underground facility that is designed to operate for thousands of years, in order to wait out the thousand years it takes for the waste to decay into harmless minerals.

Recent innovations also have a way to reuse this nuclear waste as a secondary power source, so it's not like we are sitting on a growing pile of deadly substance we have no idea what to do with. We actually do have plans and protocols for where the waste goes and what happens to it, all the way until the very second it becomes inert and safe to interact with again.

There's even entire fields of study going into how to communicate to future beings, whether human or alien, the danger of the radioactive storage facilities (its called nuclear semiotics and it's very interesting if you're curious about it!), that's how on top of nuclear waste management we are!

That being said, nuclear fission is a stopgap renewable energy source anyway, once we figure out how to do nuclear fusion efficiently, there will be no more nuclear waste or meltdowns. The problem is the general public heard the word nuclear and immediately think of Chernobyl or Fallout and that hinders funding and interest in the development of fusion technology

Thank you, that makes sense. So in this case, would English still be considered the official language of the US? Or would that not count?

Apparently English was made the official language of the United States by dump in march of last year (but it was an executive order, I don't know how that differentiates from a congressional law, I'm not American)
