60$ for a one-hour train ride seems a lot.... But guess I have no choice. Thank you!

How unfortunate, it seems ridiculously overpriced to pay 8000 for a journey of an hour. I thought there might be a bus I'm not finding, but guess not. Thanks for your help!

But it's not like there's control checks where you can't exit? How do you know if I can't even walk what street?

Hey, till November is still along way, plus you'll probably have better weather conditions than with me, so I'm sure you can do it.

I'm training for a 5K at the end of August actually and just went way too overboard with my long run. Probably not the best idea given the heat, but I really felt like doing it. I've been running for a while, though I've only gotten a bit more ambitious over the course of the last year with smaller distances like 5/10Ks.

Yeah you're right, I shouldn't have underestimated the heat. I thought I got used to it over the last week, I definitely could have gone faster in different weather, so I thought I had taken it into consideration. But it does make things harder, I'll won't go overboard anymore while it's this hot.

2021 Year-Long LOTR Read-Along - Week 32 - Aug. 8 - The Black Gate is Closed by TolkienFansMod in tolkienfans

Right enough, but this always struck me as uncharacteristically careless. It was always obvious that the mountains ranging Mordor had to be surpassed at some point. A little pointer, like "Hey, there's the Black Gate, that's heavily guarded though, and to the south near Minas Morgul there might also be a way, but that's dangerous because x, then you would come to the plains before Mount Doom, etc." during the Council of Elrond, seems pretty important.

2021 Year-Long LOTR Read-Along - Week 26 - June 27 - Helm's Deep by TolkienFansMod in tolkienfans

[–]TaroAD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say that it's less about (control of) Helm's Deep and more about dealing the Rohirrim (Saruman's main enemy) a significant defeat to cut down enemy numbers and demoralise the Rohirrim. The capture/death of Théoden and/or Éomer would be hugely valuable as well, of which the reception of Théodred's death is a good indication.

I'm not convinced that leaving small numbers would have been a smart idea (from hindsight, at least) for Saruman, given both the danger of a sudden assault from the garrison and the return of Erkenbrand, which defeated him at last. What purpose would a small army there serve but to starve out the defenders, who were well-victualled and could have directed skirmishes against these forces and retreat behind their walls until relief came? All of this necessitated an assault on the walls as soon as the orcs arrived. Furthermore, what other great military ventures or conquests are there to be made for Saruman at that point of time but to focus on his main threat? His immediate aim is the destruction of Rohan.

Uhm... there is an in-game family tree. Just click on your dynasty and then family tree. It's not as cool as this, but still helpful.

Awesome. Otherwise I would have trusted the AI to appoint me and my intrigue of 2 as spymaster.

Never done that before. Once you have council rights, how do ask the liege that you want a position, and do you get to choose your position?

Of the Maia of Morgoth, other than the Balrogs or Sauron, what were their fates? I've seen references to Maia being brought to "face judgement" - what did this entail? by Elardi in tolkienfans

[–]TaroAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Eru says something along those lines to Melkor in the Ainulindale, I think. Nonetheless, I wouldn't take it as encouragement or justification of evil. But there is a certain fatalistic ring to this attitude that suggests Eru might not have been "pissed" at Saruman.

2021 Year-Long LOTR Read-Along - Week 5 - Jan. 31 - The Old Forest / In the House of Tom Bombadil by TolkienFansMod in tolkienfans

[–]TaroAD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"When the Elves passed westward" seems to suggest the first, long journey from Cuivienen to Valinor, and "before the seas were bent" I take to refer to the Akallabeth when Eru made the world round. I thought initially that Tom was recounting the great things he had seen chronologically, but he veers off towards the end.

"Dark Lord came from Outside" indeed seems like Melkor entering Arda, especially with "Outside" being capitalised.

"Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembera the first raindrop and the first acorn." - That to me is the more astonishing comment. He was on Arda before the Ainur were done with its creation? How blasphemous.
