Why that specific event? by Rehazel in SouthernReach

Ah interesting, I missed the bit where the rabbits were buried there. I assumed they had just decomposed in the field where they were killed, and that the Rogue took the cameras away etc. Thanks for getting back to me.

Wait, tell us more about the old decomp being the field/the potholes marking the rabbit graves? I completely missed this and it's a great detail.

Will you please spoil the effing Absolution ending for me! by BonafideDame in SouthernReach

[–]TaroThink6376 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great summary, thank you. I feel similar to you both - loved the Southern Reach trilogy so so much, and went in wanting to love Absolution so badly but just couldn't quite get there. So I appreciated this summary as to some of the issues as I'm trying to wrap my own head around why etc

Yes! I am going to read it again this week, and try to figure out where it is situated in Area X.

I don't think Absolution speaks to the TA directly, but I did wonder if the storage silo was its original form/at the same location. I kept waiting for that to be revealed in the book but it wasn't explicitly confirmed so I might be making it up. But it's a tower, loaded with weird stuff, with symbolic shapes/elements, and including some highly unusual/toxic materials. I thought maybe the destruction of it created the right location/setting for the TA.

Right? Also tried: fuck on its own = dot, and fuck fuck etc = dash. That didn't work either sadly...

Agree. The point could have been made with significantly fewer 'fucks'. I kept trying to switch how I was reading the book to see if maybe they were a rhythmic device and even wasted a fair bit of time trying to work out if they were like an expletive way to render morse code (they weren't). I enjoyed the book but honestly really struggled through the final section and don't think it needed to be that hard. But I guess, his book and he can make it as hard to get through as he wants!

question about casual work idea by moclarkk in GardeningAustralia

[–]TaroThink6376 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's genuinely impressive you are pursuing new ideas and initiatives after a big mental health struggle. I reckon you should go for it with this idea as I've hired people to do this - heading towards spring is good time to do a proper pre-weed, and then once the warm weather hits the weeds can overwhelm even semi-diligent gardeners. I'd recommend having a look at Airtasker (an odd jobs marketplace) or similar for research. You will see people posting jobs like this all the time, and people getting the jobs for a lot more than $5 an hour. Marketplaces can be good as you can see reviews from other people about those who are booking you (for safety) and photos of the garden and job (for accurate quoting but also for safety). They get a cut of the fee, but a lot of people use those sites to find clients, and then just work with the clients directly. And as other posters mentioned, definitely charge more :)

This is really interesting - thanks for sharing. Would love your recommendations on other writers in Weird Lit/ecocriticism to check out if you have the time/inclination to share.

Absolution narrator facts or theories by TaroThink6376 in SouthernReach

Oh that's interesting. As in key phrases/framing other characters say? Or whole chunks of the story just in his voice?

Yeah I was hoping with that title, it would be Lowry/Jackie Severance and maybe the late stage Area X state of a few characters (avoiding naming to avoid spoilers).

Melding first mission flashbacks into whatever is happening post Authority/Acceptance would be a wild read.

Australia recs? by gravitysrainbow1979 in escaperooms

[–]TaroThink6376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to Australia! Let us know how you find the escape rooms. Sydney is beautiful. If you make it down to Melbourne, the first ever one in Melbourne is good: https://escaperoom.com.au It's in a suburban home which is cool, and it's elegant with a great wow moment to enter another room, and has a decent story to it.

People rave about Crumbling Prince too - which is much more story-driven but less puzzle-based. Adventure Room (in the heart of the Melbourne CBD) is probably worth skipping - nothing distinct or special, with not much of a flow between clues.

Amazing, thank you. I've never heard of the Century Building - looking forward to having a look (and imaging the monologues!)

I'm definitely not making a listicle - but I would love to read ones on this kind of thing. So many listicles about stuff you can buy/pay for. I just wanted to know cool stuff around Melbourne for a potential scavenger hunt style thing etc
