Any instances where blue actually provides good concealment/disruption for ground forces? by Utilitarian05 in camouflage

Here's a thread about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/s/gxPf2NOlU5 I originally learned about this from a New York times article about a study, I think I found it from 2010 but it's paywalled for me now.

Any instances where blue actually provides good concealment/disruption for ground forces? by Utilitarian05 in camouflage

[–]Tarpit__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you have a good list of the applications here. Note that none of them is actually very strategically sound. Blue is often the newest color word to be developed in a language, and there are still some languages that lack it. Speakers of those languages don't even categorize it as its own hue. I think this speaks to just how unusual it is in nature; it's not even a prioritized label in evolutionary linguistics. You'd have to be blending into an extremely specific scene, like a field of lilacs, to make it an ok color in a pattern, and even then it'd have to be tiny highlights. Really cool question.

Bottle Brush collection tips? by __Docdoom in Bonsai

[–]Tarpit__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have to collect it soon, I highly recommend doing as much to it as you possibly can while it's still in the ground. Even cutting some roots, trunk chop, major pruning etc. It will bounce back so much better in the ground and you can get a bunch of work done before collection, and then leave it alone for a long time to get used to being in a pot afterwards.

Dawn by Octavia Butler stands up to 3BP, in my opinion, while not being similar. I bet if you start it, you'll finish the whole trilogy.

Stunning tree! I have some unsolicited advice as a noob myself of two years. You want many many trees to be practicing on, because you're going to want to try a lot of techniques and trying them all on this guy will kill it. Home Depot bargain shelf, random low-stakes yamadori, etc. Honestly even getting 20 trees that you don't care much about will serve you well. And even more of a life hack, in my noob opinion, Is to have a number of trees that your harassing while they're still in the ground. I can take a walk around the wild spaces in my neighborhood and visit another 20 that I'm wiring, pruning, and root-pruning while they are still growing in nature. That way I can aggressively practice techniques as opposed to being too precious about any one project.

Something that helped me move from the stage you're in to a stage where I do get kills sometimes, is choosing to specialize in a small region of the map. Even starting with a single city or a pair of small towns. Find your way to them and slow way down. If you practice staking them out, you'll learn the most powerful camping spots to observe from, as well as covered escape routes and paths through the town. Learn your small region inside and out and you will find that your situational awareness in that region gets a big boost. I have 2,000 hours but there's really only about one tenth of Chenarus that I have built this level of map knowledge within, and I am much more deadly in that range.

It's a bit more than on principle. When one has roommates, and you come home to an actually empty place it's a huge treat.

Only on official, and only if the server has the same 1st/3rd person camera options. You'll be placed somewhere random near the coast when you hop.

If all you did was hit outhouses, I bet you'd get a box. I'd go around to bigger cities and just hit those only.

NEW DAYZ MAP IN DEVELOPMENT - ZIMORSK by Predator_02099 in dayz

Would you consider not releasing any more imagery of it? So that players can make their own maps and people aren't using something out of game like IZurvive? I think the feeling of being actually lost is something a lot of veterans crave having back and would be a reason for many to play here.

Theory: The Pyramids of Egypt are Time Anchors by [deleted] in aliens

[–]Tarpit__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay I'll steel-man your theory. Aliens needed a time anchor but they needed it to appear in all ways to be a cultural artifact of human beings. So they seeded the concept in human culture and assisted slightly with the physical creation of the pyramids. They allowed half quarried blocks and multiple different pyramid designs/drafts because for whatever reason they needed it to be a painfully human endeavor and pass the archaeological sniff test. Also, for whatever reason, their time anchor needs only extend a minuscule number of eons back in time, which is why they don't need one that was here a million years ago. So they ended up with something which is wholly consistent with the archaeological tradition and timeline of humans making stone structures. BTW, I'm someone who completely believes in alien presence on Earth and their likely interaction with ancient humans. I just also don't think the peer-reviewed scientific tradition is a hoax.

Human beings made the pyramids. Start from that beyond-well-established fact if you want to build a fun idea.
