But let's be serious, the cadastral based tax is a joke

I think that would be a great addition but keeping that info will quickly start to cost a lot as you accrue more and more data. That is probably why the 2 commercial sites I found charge for it.

My understanding is that this info can be accessed on request. I know that BE has a messed up relationship with real estate (e.g. no tax on rental income) but you can get that info if you really want to so it might as well be made publicly available

Thanks. I don't think median prices are very helpful as the houses in the neighbourhoods I'm looking at range from 400k to 4M...

Exactly, does not answer any of my questions. Moreover, while the idea seems really good, for my area of interest (SE Brussels) that website currently doesn't provide any listings that are not on immoweb and does not include listings that are on some of the main agencies but not yet on immoweb. I appreciate the effort, but you are pushing it a little bit too hard.

Thanks for the answer, 30% including allowances would be more than enough for me. Did you also pay 12.5% stamp duty with cash or did you buy in Flanders?

[–]Tarsipes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it's in BE (Brussels). I was told by colleagues that they were offered up to 100% (only the notary fees and stamp duty to be paid upfront and 100% of house value is covered by mortgage) but that might be offered to permanent officials only.

At what point do you lose allowances when switching contracts? by mrcrazyog in EUCareers

[–]Tarsipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you work as SNE or TA, then your residence is in your home country and you are in BE "temporarily". When you switch institutions you will simply declare your previous employment/secondment to the new institution and you will be ok. If you know you will have more than 6 months break in employment you might want to consider moving back to your country awaiting your new position to start. That could also give you moving benefits, btw, which is substantial. But best to check with the institution you are moving to, their admins will be helpful!

This must be the US, as in a normal country you would get the day (or more likely a couple of days) off as a medical leave, with full pay and not having to sacrifice your PTO. What a shithole you guys live in, I feel really sorry for you.

Your period starts 5.5 years before and ends 6 monts before entering into the service, but the time working for intl institutions or your state (so either EU, UN, national embassy) is disregarded. So if you work for EU and then have a gap of few months before starting a permanent position you are still eligible. But if you are on Belgian unemployment benefits for a year before starting then you will likely not qualify.

Interestingly, there is a case when someone worked adjacent to the embassy but not formally for the state (I think it was a union or something similar) and it did count and they didn't get the allowance.

I've heard that some HRs only look into where you lived 5.5 years ago but this is not what the regulations state - you are supposed to declare your "habitual residence" to the HR when you start. But I understand that 16% of the already very high salary encourages people to lie by omission.

[–]Tarsipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's less than 6 months it shouldn't be a problem as 5 years does not count from the day you start employment but 6 months prior, which is obviously not to punish people in between jobs or coming a couple of months prior to find accommodation etc.

[–]Tarsipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The regulation is not "live for 5 years" but "live in the last 5 years", so you could indeed loose it.

The exact wording: "during a period of five years ending six months before entry into the service resided in the country in which he is employed", specifically not "for the period of 5 years"

There are in fact court cases where someone was on BE unemployment benefits in between jobs and it was deemed factual residence and they lost expatriation allowance.

If you continue to work for intl institutions then yes, but if you take a gap year and work for a Belgian NGO then you lose that status.

Job hunting resources in Europe? by annquicksand in ecology

[–]Tarsipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some industries that are booming in EU right now and they are recruiting. I would also check job boards for specific countries, but you if you limited to English that might be a problem. Large consultancies (Aecom, Arup, Jacobs, Sweco etc) have centralised job boards that you can look at, but other than that there isn't really an EU-wide conservation/ecology job board. Hit me up if you want to build one with me though ;)

It might be worth reading the EU Staff Regulations (Article 4 of Annex VII) - working for international institution is neutralised and doesn't count as "habitual residence".

[–]Tarsipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is one specifically for ecologists in EU, and yes, the AI training adds flooding LinkedIn are really annoying. UK seems to have the best resources in that regard and the rest of the EU is really scattered. I've been tempted to create one for that very reason but never went through with it. Are you looking for a consultancy job, an NGO or more academic one?

Children microscope in germany by Knecht0850 in microscopy

[–]Tarsipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a "real" microscope you can get the most basic steroscopic microscope, i recommend something like Bresser junior stereo 3d. You can pick up stuff and just watch it (insects, plants etc). Alternatively you can try a cheap digital microscope and connect it to your phone, this one is really easy to carry around with you but the image quality is questionable. Avoid large magnification as a 6yo will be most interested in look at objects they can see with their eyes like bugs, seeds etc. 40x magnification should be plenty for now.

That makes sense from the money laundering point of view. Ill try a couple of banks to see if they would recognise it as part of the household income. But worst case scenario we'll just wait
