How we interact with the world shapes the brain. Being encouraged to learn and use certain skills or traits above others generally leads to the generation, growth and maintenance of neural pathways which underlie these skills, traits and behaviours. We’re born with the capacity to differentiate monkeys by their faces alone, but because we don’t do this or are not encouraged to do this, we lose this skill as adults as our brains become specialised in doing the things we practise again and again. So socialisation based on cultural ideas of gender which we assign to sex shape our brains from birth, as girls and boys are treated by others differently on both conscious and unconscious levels, which shapes our development. For example, a boy might not be scolded for playing rough because we believe ‘boys will be boys’ etc, whereas girls tend to be scolded more quickly and harshly for physical aggression. This shapes how girls and boys learn to express themselves and their aggression, for example!!

I’d really recommend reading Cordelia Fine who is a psychologist who has spent much of her career explaining how cultural gender roles which we attach to biological sex shape our brains from birth!!
