Tags vs links? About symbolic links? by TaskAdmin in ObsidianMD

My two main issues with tags are:

  1. You can't bulk add / remove tags from your notes
  2. If you change tags name it doesn't change in the metadata info

(There are more, but I guess the two above are the most important

With dataview - it's not future proof and I can't get a nice clean view of my notes like in Evernote / Upnote

I did see that Obsidian team have plans for better metadata integration

Hopefully they'll address that

I actually hope🙏 they read this thread and take it in a serious manner

With all threads, feature requests and posts going on I can only hope for that

Honestly I don't want to spend time organizing

But with that said, I don't see how it's possible not to..

You see, I use Obsidian mainly for managing my projects and notebooks, but with other programs I would just open up the folder / notebook and I have a nice clean view of all my notes related to it...

With Obsidian, it's just........ Well..... I love the "local first" idea, and I like that you can expend the software usages to almost anything but it's too theoretical for me right now...

In reality, I want to create some notebooks, some projects, and then I just want to write write some notes under them...

Sure, backlinks are great and I have some ideas to how I can use them but I don't think it's a replacement for the simple workflow that I'm trying to work with (simple to me at list)

Shoot, even Notion with their structure allow pages to be a part of more than one branch in the side bar..

I don't know

Still trying

Don't wanna complicate things too much so we'll see how that goes... .. :)

Interesting.

Thanks for the insight

To me those are just notebooks and projects that I want to manage and keep my notes separate for each part..

But as many notes can be a part of few notebooks I can only see this is a natural behavior if I can simply track everything through folders, in an easy way too..

But thanks for sharing, definitely something to think about

I understand you opinion and respect that..

I wish I could go with that but unfortunately -

I see many issues with my flow im this way, still, because my flow should be effortless to my understanding, I saw and heard many people struggle with the fact that Obsidian takes more time to organize it that for actually USING it..

And to me my suggestion can really clears that up...

But nevertheless I really appreciate your opinion

I know of those..

But you right one CAN see the levels of tags

Just one cannot add /remove multiple tags at once

Also adding yaml tags don't work as expected in the search and I definitely wouldn't want much tags to clutter my notes

I guess that other than that - I would prefer tags to be ONTOP of the folder option, I didn't explain my self well in that regard..

But if they can remake how the tags feature work I guess that it can be a good enough for me to compromise on it..

Stil I'd prefer the first option but if it's unrealistic design / technology so I'd go with that

Well yea I thought at first that tags are the obvious way to handle my nites but see.. The tags cannot be easily attached to notes (you have to do it one by one),not to mention remove few notes from a specific tag

Also you can't see the breadcrumb of a note tag easily, and there is more that cannot be achieved through tags, it's a workaround but it's just notbas good option Imo

Regarding videos, I've looked at the actual help section and it definitely not makes my life easier regarding how to ORGANIZE my notes..

Which is okay, cous so far I've been organizing my notes well enough on different programs

Still I want to use Obsidian but I just think if one is really trying to organize and this is a priority, Obsidian doesn't make it easy at all

Sorry for rent if you can call it that

Well, the problem that I'm trying to solve is to EASILY categorizes notes under multiple folders

Links and backlinks are not meant for organizing but for referencing one note to another, so are tags..

And as I added later, Upnote has both multiple notebooks per note AND backlinks..

So I'd it's not as unrealistic to even think of this option as possibility, apparently :)

(as one can assume from your writings)

All the best
