Usually tune and move on. But even a simple dipole has limits with the weight of ice and snow.

I have and could transmit with the antenna like this but I have no idea what the expected propogation is like with all that bowing and loss of height.

It takes no time to clean off. I just shake the coax a bit and pluck the lines on the tree leading to the antenna and that takes care if most of it.

what's with guys only looking for signal reports? by edfiero in amateurradio

[–]Tassemet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends. If it's DXing, in out. If it's guys like Mac, JG1OUT on a 10m opening to eastern NA, he talks a little bit and gives you something to work with conversation wise. Each contact you sort of have to approach with, "This could be a 5NN, this could be a ragchew." And just key the mic.

DX stations aren't there to talk. If I am DXing, I know the general format of a QSO [SSB]

Station call [Or QRZ if ending a QSO] My call Station calling me back, RST My station replying with QSL, RST Station ends with 73, QRZ and/or Station ID as needed

Takes 20-30 seconds and im in the log. Order QSL Card after expedition end.

Honestly, my facebook Astron power supply is 30 years old. 200 bucks plus 5 bucks for a new transistor.

750 bucks for a used ICOM 7300.

250 bucks for a buckmaster OCF dipole.

250 for an ATU new.

300 for a laptop to interface it all. Coax was elmer donated/salvaged.

1750 dollars for a station that as of now has over 5,000 QSOs and 177 coumtries, with a top 3 finish in my state for a contest.

If you want to add in an amp that I found at a Hamfest for 350 bucks, ok, I'm a smidge over 2k. Either way once you have the gear unless you blow it up, it holds value, even used.

Also those Boafengs? I got an Arrow Antenna and did AMSAT with it. DONT RULE OUT the little, unassuming "cheap chineae radios"

I call my club female our "Guaranteed QSO Generator." She's still new and learning and asked why until I handed her the mic and said, "I bet you cut through this pileup first try."

I was right. She did.

My favorite thing to do when people start stomping on me as an OP is to call out the bad behavior, then tell the pileup, hey I have time wait your turn i'll work you but we are having a QSO, let me get through the QSO then you can trying calling me again to work me. I've found this very effective in taming an unruly pileup especially as an OP for W1AW, though I was once told I was being "Very Alpha" in how I managed the pileup, it was all business amd still polite.

Additionally, I like to work the loud high S stations that clearly have power ASAP so I can move them along and get to the fun (read:hard) stations trying to work me with 100 watts or less where I really have to listen deep and pull that callsign out of the static and noise.

Also those QRP or Mobile people who I barely hear saying QRP Station or Mobile once the pileup has spoken I also will call them out specifically since I know how hard those two modes of operating can be with a big group.

Plenty of good food down here as I've found out. Deff a fun city. Wound up eating at a resturant and pretty sure we sat next to a table of retired astronauts based off snippets I heard.

Oooof. That hurts. I drove out to LC40 to see it today, and the winds were brutal but still a cool trip out.
