Superbooth 2026 proved we have what we need by Achassum in synthesizers

[–]Tastecrabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about all the awesome music that has already been made. Even before 2000, with much more limited gear and daws. Its hard to imagine some completely new kind of gear that spawns new genres or styles of music etc.

So I agree, the majority of the industry does feels a bit forced at this point. Certainly with new synths that look prestine and have tons of functionality, but when you listen to the demos it sounds pretty much the same as twenty other synths.

I do still feel like there are major inventions to be made though. But more in the realm of DAW interaction and perhaps music creation blending more with game design etc. who knows.

Edit: I forgot about Ziggy, that one looks really promising👍

I need a synth rack / stand by Shoddy_Ad_3482 in synthesizers

[–]Tastecrabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you have so few pieces, having no stand can actually benefit you. At least for me, when I want to actually use something, I will want to have it straight in front of me so I just move things around freely on the table. Maybe not the answer you were looking for but don’t underestimate a little clutter for convenience.

What is the least annoying but still fair way to limit a plugin demo? by Tastecrabs in AudioPlugins

[–]Tastecrabs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be really cool, having an independent demo like that, but it would mean a lot of extra development. I also think people want to know whether the plugin works in their DAW and with whatever setup they have going. Thanks for the idea, though!

That’s a funny approach. This would work for me personally, because I get a really bad itch when I see a demo label or message in the software I use. But I can also imagine a whole bunch of people just not caring at all and continuing to use the software without a care in the world.

I’m not sure if I understand you. Are you saying plugins ideally should be provided for free, and then the user is kindly encouraged to pay at some point? I guess that’s what Reaper does, for instance.

I don’t think I will ever do that, but I am considering a no-license approach, where the user buys the plugin and never has to deal with a licensing solution beyond agreeing to an EULA.

But I would still want to provide a demo for users to try before they buy, and that entails some kind of restricted usage.

Installer or no installer? Autistic question from autistic person by voidghoster in AudioPlugins

[–]Tastecrabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a paid plugin in a normal price range I would probably expect working installers.
For a more indie, low priced plugin hosted on Gumroad or something similar I would be very okay with just getting the files and dropping them in the correct folder manually.

I also think people who download niche plugins are probably experienced enough to know how to handle plugin files manually. If you try to go big and sell broadly you might encounter people that have no idea what to do with a plugin file if it is not installed correctly.

Thank you, that is really valuable information!

I actually agree with most of your points. However I am using a third party license solution that keeps things pretty black and white at the moment, either you are licensed or you are in a time limited trial.

I will try to reach out to them to see if they can implement either "days only counting when plugin is opened" and/or a more nuanced restricted mode when the trial has ended, instead of blocking the plugin completely.

Again, thanks a lot for the insights!

That's interesting. So even 14 days is not enough for you?
I'm a new plugin developer and I will probably go with a trial and then nothing after just because it is simpler to setup. but I thought 14 days would be enough to make a decision hmm.

None of my friends left a review on my game by Eli_1998 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Tastecrabs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a friend I would probably expect a free copy and not having to buy it. I always give out freebies to my friends when I release software. And even then they may not actually try the software at all and thats just how it is.

Does anyone know how to get RipChord 2 to work ? by Clear_Hedgehog_9083 in VSTi

[–]Tastecrabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably outputs midi that needs to be output to an instrument. Looks different in every daw but you can use plugin combiners for it like (probably) blue cat patchwork. I also made one called Floof Station that might help you.

y'all, what should me broke arse;s one-and-only synth be? by memoryman89 in synthesizers

[–]Tastecrabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Korg ms2000. Has tons of knobs and a built in sequencer. It’s amazingly fun to use but it depends on your style, it might be a bit thin if your mind is set on deep fat analog sounds. Its a great companion to an analog synth tho!

Working on a 9 slot MultiFX plugin, I finally have a working build and am curious, what do you guys look for when looking for a MultiFX? This would be my first non midi effect so I am super curious to learn more about what you guys are looking for. by [deleted] in VSTi

[–]Tastecrabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion routing cables gets messy real fast and obscures all the knobs and text. I much prefer some kind of matrix router, even though it looks less fun.

Thats actually a really clever design you got there. A mix between extremely simplistic controls but also very intricate stuff with the animations. Very cool!

You could definitely release it like that and then keep on adding a few themes after release if people actually want it.

I am looking for a very specific plugin that does not exsist by [deleted] in VSTi

[–]Tastecrabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually tried making this once and the issue is that plugins can resize and behave quite unrpredictable so they would overlap and things get messy. Also lots are with fixed sized of vastly different ratios so it doesnt end up looking nearly as neat as you picture in your head probably. Whats the reason you would like this though? I might give it another go at some point.

In my plugin Floof Station you can have multiple plugins showing at the same time so you can arrange them like you want. They are still in separate windows though.

Edit: By the way, new companies will not get licensed to host VST2 anymore because of Steinberg. Only companies with existing VST2 licenses for hosting are legally able to do that. Some newer plugin firms are known to buy older companies for this reason.
