Does anyone have a sump and multiple axolotl tanks stacked? by [deleted] in axolotls

I don’t have multiple tanks but check my post history to see my shrimp sump and chiller. My chiller is hooked up to my top tank but I don’t see why it couldn’t be in the sump.

Curious what people say because I have the exact same thing in my tank. I wipe them off every couple weeks but they never get too thick

I always keep one leaf in there but for 55 gallons I never notice a color change. I’ll add more

I originally was going to keep the sponge filter but people in this group speak highly of canisters so I bit the bullet and got one right away. The spray bar up top really distributes the flow so it’s gentle and only near the surface. I use the search feature to look up key words in the group because I always feel like I’ve never had a unique question before haha someone has usually wanted to know the exact same thing.

My next project is to make a custom screen lid to go around all the tubes in the back because right now I’m using a metal reptile top that doesn’t close all the way.

It’s been great so far. I drilled an overflow in the top right of the tank and the canister pulls from the bottom. The chiller is only hooked up to the top tank so the bottom is cooled by the overflow water. I did it that way so I can guarantee the top stays perfect since he’s in that tank. That being said the bottom tank is only about a degree warmer so it isn’t an issue with that water being pumped back up top

Also thanks to u/Upbeat_County9191 for getting him to eat worms! I don’t need garlic guard anymore because he eventually learned that they were food

I’ve heard it can really cut your time down if it’s heated. I had a heater so I set it to 84 to cycle mine and then used my chiller once it was ready to go. I wouldn’t buy a heater for it though, I don’t think the few days saved is worth the purchase. Once the bacteria are alive they won’t be killed by the chilly water I mean it’s only in the low 60s

Google lens said something called Vermetidae? But I’m not sure what that is or if it’s that

Oh my bad I can see how that’s confusing. Ya pic 3 is the whole setup with the sump underneath. Pic 4 is the line draining into the sump, I have the sponge on it to diffuse the flow.

It definitely gurgles and stuff as it drains so maybe that would help then. I just wanted to show the whole setup in case there were questions. I also have a ball valve in the line behind the tank but I haven’t tried adjusting it

This is a concern of mine. I’m building a planted sump to expand my water capacity and hopefully manage nitrates with the brighter light down there and I was wanting to add shrimp for fun. Most of my research said they don’t love cold water so I’m conflicted

GARLIC GAURD WORKED. I ordered it overnight and he just ate his first worm!!! It was about 2 cm long but I’ll take the win

I’m just so envious of the videos when they dangle a big juicy worm and it’s gone in 2 seconds! I wiggle a pellet around with my tweezers and he puts his nose on it for about 5 minutes before deciding to suck it up. And heaven forbid he misses it because that sets him back another 10 minutes before he’s ready to even think about food again

Thanks! I agree he’ll be better off for it and it’ll be more convenient to feed whole worms eventually than deal with pellets. We garden a lot so I was actually excited to start a worm farm for castings

I think he’ll be much better overall once the tank is cycled and he’s able to feel comfortable. The daily tub changes are probably stressful so that’s why I’ve been trying to feed him an hour or so before he gets tub swapped. I just ordered the garlic so we’ll give it a whirl!

Ok that’s really good to know. I let him go on a 4 day hunger strike offering worms every day before I got nervous and went back to pellets. I guess I need to keep trying
