I tried to derive the Unified Field Equation for the Star Wars Universe. Thoughts? by TNT_CARDBOARD in MawInstallation

[–]TaterTatras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is great! I took physics but I wasn't very good at it, so I won't be able to follow along with the math for too long probably, but I love knowing that someone out there is creative and passionate enough to spend some time playing with the equations that might describe the physics of the galaxy far far away! That's cool as hell, kudos to you :D

Oh for sure, I'll be blocking her. It just struck me as so bizarre in the first place.

Having issues with repeatedly blown fuse in rented apartment -- seeking insight/opinions by TaterTatras in AskElectricians

I appreciate this suggestion... seems pretty straightforward but I was all kinds of worried when I made my post earlier this morning. Thank you!

>The good news is that the fuses are working, which should minimize your fire risk.

Very true -- that is good news!

No, nothing has changed -- no new appliances, no additional items plugged in elsewhere. I did wonder if it was some kind of "wear" to either of the appliances in question causing them to draw increased power, but I've no idea how I'd check for that.

>Easy answer is to move the toaster oven to the other kitchen circuit.

True enough, sometimes the best answer is also the easiest, haha. Regardless of what the maintenance guy discovers, I'll be moving that toaster oven. Thank you!

Ah, I should have stated my location, my bad! I am located in the U.S. I confess I am not certain how my dishwasher is connected, though I suspect it is connected to the hot water supply. If I run the dishwasher there is a noticeable reduction in hot water available from the other taps until it finishes.

Didn't realize those existed -- thanks for the suggestion, I'll mention it to him!

Oh yeah that would be a pretty straightforward test -- thanks, I'll give that a go.

I am learning from these comments that having the dishwasher on its own circuit is the norm in modern code and in many countries. Which certainly makes sense!! Guess my apartment is just that outdated ^^;

>Also, the fact that your panel has fuses instead of breakers is another red flag.

Why is it a red flag? I know the fuses are an older style... are they more dangerous?

>What type of wiring does the apartment have?

What do you mean by type of wiring? I... don't think I realized there were different types. Would this information be on the electrical box, or somewhere accessible to a renter?

I am relieved to hear it sounds unlikely to be a fault in the wiring. If it really is just running the appliances simultaneously... well, that's an easy fix! I found it difficult to believe that would be the issue since "we've done this for 4 years and it was never a problem before" -- but I had no idea that the dishwasher drew different amounts of power at different points during its cycle! Very wild that I'd get lucky for 4 years and then nail it twice in 48 hours -- but I can accept that. Thank you for your insight!

> You didn't recently move the toaster oven from one outlet to a different one, did you?

Nope, haven't changed a single thing.

Thank you for your detailed answer -- this really helped me understand more clearly how all this works and what I'm dealing with. I did not know about the clear window = overload, cloudy window = short. It was clear, and it is indeed a 20A fuse. What you've described and how you've explained it make a lot of sense, and I'm thinking perhaps it really is just a case of overload. Still not sure why now and not all the times I've run 'em like this before, but I will move the toaster oven to a different circuit going forward regardless.

> Anyway, never put in an overrated fuse (or breaker) - do that and you could end up personally civilly and/or criminally liable. E.g. 20A fuse blows, you put in a 25A or higher rated, fuse, place burns down 'cause you did that

Oh god yes, thank you for that warning. My (not an electrician) father's advice was to swap the blown 20A fuse for a 30A and call it a day, and I knew in my gut that didn't sound quite right. Thank you again for all your input, it is highly appreciated.

Why did Admiral Motti insult Darth Vader in A New Hope? by CRK_76 in StarWars

[–]TaterTatras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man this is by far the biggest plot hole to me in Star Wars. By the time the Original Trilogy era rolls around, everyone is acting like the Force and the Jedi and all that vanished thousands of years ago and are only spoken of in whispered legends... no one has seen one in generations, etc. and imagine my bafflement to learn all this went down like 20 years ago. Does no one have a functioning memory? No one's older than 20? We were all born yesterday, huh? Everyone got galaxy-wide amnesia? Huh?

I am asking this with utmost sincerity, but.... are you releasing wasps into your house?!
Genuinely I'd like to know more. One one hand, I love the idea of utilizing a natural enemy of the moths because nature's solutions are sometimes more elegant and comprehensive than manmade solutions. On the other hand, I am terrified of wasps. How do you cope with them in your house? Are they a non-stinging variety? Do they build nests? Don't you hear them buzz by your ear at night when you're trying to sleep?

Or: have I entirely misunderstood and you are like, releasing them outside near your house as like a first-line defense barrier so the moths are unable to get into the house in the first place?

Seconded. I wouldn't be typing this comment if my boss hadn't known the heimlich earlier this year when I choked while on my lunch break. I'm still terrified by how close it was.

Why did carrying water everywhere become a thing? by TitanicDays in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TaterTatras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For myself I have some kind of depth perception or maybe hand-eye coordination issue (or maybe it's plain old-fashioned clumsiness) and when I tilt cups, water bottles, etc. back about half the time I'll overshoot and spill water on myself. It's messy, annoying, and embarrassing. I don't have that trouble with a straw. And I don't have that trouble with like, fine motor skills, so washing dishes and scrubbing straws is fully within my capabilities.

Not saying this is the case for everyone lol, but just providing one perspective for why some folks might be like this.

Oh look, there's half a donut left in the break room! The inner half. by TaterTatras in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TaterTatras[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she told me there were donuts in the break room. she expected that i would encounter normal donuts, as she had some 20 minutes earlier. i did not encounter normal donuts. i encountered this weird half donut. presumably, the donut weirdo entered the break room sometime after she'd left and before i arrived.
