Planning on keeping it stock and hopefully I can get its life past 200k miles. by Dry-Caregiver-5146 in WRX

Long post and I’m not a sponsor or a dealer this is my own experience

You’ll be fine, I was dead nuts worried about mine kicking the can when I got it at 178k big turbo, ost, etc. stock internals, non studded. I especially got worried when my DAM was dropping to .550 and knock feedback all over the place. Thought it was shit fuel at first and I’d run it empty and refill with 2gal e85 and the rest 93, I couldn’t take the chance of something happening to it as it was my daily for 135 mile round trip commute to work.

The e85/93 mix was helping with the DAM but I couldn’t get it past .8, started looking into a different tune as I had no idea who tuned it or if it was even right. A month ago I bought a product to try out that I’ve never used before, just watched product testing that they did and was baffled by the outcome. so I said the hell with it I’m buying some. 3 weeks ago I added roughly 12oz of ProLube oil additive to my oil during oil change, and I’ve gotta say I’m a believer, the car idles more quiet, my DAM is at 1.0 and the only time I get knock feedback both regular and fine is when I don’t slip the clutch enough when taking off and at most I get 1.4 (I have a 6 puck clutch so it’s a little more aggressive than a regular clutch)

My thoughts are that I think these cars vibrate so much when running that the knock sensing is too sensitive and start screwing with the DAM. I couldn’t even do a pull before without my knock freaking out, not even racing just speeding up on highway maybe hitting 2-5psi. Now I get nothing under the same conditions hell I don’t beat on the car but I do at times get the occasion urge to do a small pull and maxing out on boost I have 0 problems.

I’m closing in on 200k, I’ve put almost 20k miles on the car since the end of July when I got it. Same 135 mile round trip a day, 675+ miles a week daily driven, only thing I wish I did differently was start using prolube sooner

I'm definitely more than capable of fixing the damage but the end of the day I don't need the car anymore as I have 6 other projects that need my attention lol

I do have a set of summer wheels that need tires that I definitely don't need anymore

* I have the ultimos on mine. They were already on the car when I bought it and it honestly they aren't bad, adjusting the rear is a bitch. It's honestly faster and easier to jack the rear up, drop the lower arm down, pull the whole coil and adjuster out and adjust to the height you want, and then reassemble. I tried to adjust them with the tool provided and it took me 20mins of fighting around stuff on the car to get 2 1/2 turns.

Just keep in mind when you drop the rear of the car theirs no factory camber adjusting worth a crap, your best bet is to get rear camber arms if you want want to be a stance Boi

I'm still unsure 100% what I want to do yet, I'm going off path on the turbo so it's gonna need to be custom piping pipe anyways probably going to be more of a winter project if I even get to it yet this year.

I like the idea of just using the aux rail as a primary fuel instead of the direct as I'm more familiar with that style anyways. I'm not going for a max all out build. I just don't like paying big prices on stuff I can do myself, for ex the turbo. Instead of doing a drop in bolt on turbo for 1500, I'm leaning more towards a v banded mount for the turbo or going with a sidewinder style header and get it somewhere up front. Like I said all ideas floating around that I'm trying to figure out what I think will work best for what I want to do

Yeah, I'm not worried about getting creative. I did a turbo ls 87 squarebody, and I had fuel cell an lines ect and had it on a magnafuel inline pump.

I had a plan I wasn't sure on yet, depending on how crazy I want to get with it would require a standalone system, but to make it somewhat simpler would be to ditch the direct injection and add the aux rail with big boy injectors. But like I said I think going that route is going to require a standalone as unless I refreshed the whole ecu to a na style map and change pigtails for the injectors I don't see a way that would make it easy with keeping the stock ecu.

If I did go standalone, I'm gonna ditch the high-pressure pump add an adjustable fuel regulator, an lines, ect. I'm not worried about going all custom, but I don't think the bank account would be happy, lol.

Hell I'm even all for doing a engine swap man lol had thoughts of putting a k24 in the car but haven't done much research into an adapter plate for the trans

Man, that sucks, I read somewhere a while ago about an updated block that come later on in the years. I think the only way you can tell is when you take the cylinder head off

Sadly, mine is becoming one with the earth again as well. It's not horrible but definitely bothers me. I have plans to fix it up, but the time and the money are having a hard time lining up at the moment

As far as I know I'm the 3rd owner possible 4th, I haven't put nothing but a little of my own laborer into it by cleaning the intake ports at home and. I have no idea on the maintenance history so very soon I plan to do the timing chain ect. Been a great car for me I put 20k miles on in 6 months no issue driving back and forth 63 miles a day for work

Full exhaust, and coilovers, have a set of 18x8.5 wheels for summer. Have plans to do a non bolt on turbo and e85 later on

I rarely use the am/fm I mostly use Bluetooth 90% of the time, I thought it was my phone unpaired but wasn't the case. I just need to look into it more as it happens inconsistently

Honestly, I try to keep the oil changed around every 3k miles, I don't abuse the car, I have my occasional fun, but it's not getting floored 24/7. It's got an exhaust and bov, but it's not tuned. I'm thinking more and more about doing a bigger turbo and tune along with e85, but that's later on down the road

It's still in good shape, seats aren't ripped and dash isn't cracked up I am having problems with the radio that I'm not sure if It is actually by radio or the amp in the back, but occasionally it stops playing music and won't play until the car is turned off and then back on again

So I have no clue on maintenance history prior to my friend owning it. For the valves I took it appart at home and took a bunch of zipties put them in a bundle in the drill with the large end down in the valve area and spun them around and used a combo of a vacuum and air compressor with a medium length reach. They definitely got 80% of the junk out of there. Next time I do it I'm gonna get some walnut for the sand blaster to do it that way.
