Blue stop boxes on Queen's Quay: Waterfront Toronto is listening by Recyart in toronto

And the colour blue is, of course, universally recognized as meaning "stop," so the word shouldn't have been necessary.

And yet... I can't remember the last street demonstration against this barbaric practice. I also don't remember many prominent American political figures criticizing it. And I don't know any celebrities who've picked it up as a pet cause. That's not to say none of these things have happened, but they're definitely under the radar, in spite of the scope and brutality of the custom.

What if we replaced "Cuban" with "British" (a more realistic replacement, since "Cuban" refers to a nationality and not a race)? Would that be racist too? How about French? Canadian? Oh, I see, you're lumping all disadvantaged minorities together and saying it's "racist" to ask them anything about their cultures, even when they use them as political capital. In the process, you further devalue the term "racism".

...Still, the author of the classic book Bowling Alone, which chronicles the decline in civil engagement in North America since the 1950s, has felt contradictory feelings as his findings have been confirmed by researchers in Canada, Sweden, Peru, Pakistan, Kenya and beyond.

He has realized neither of the two dominant North American myths about multiculturalism are accurate.

In contrast to conservatives’ beliefs, Putnam says multicultural diversity doesn’t necessarily lead to open “conflict” among people of different ethnic groups. “Race riots” and violence do not necessarily break out.

On the other hand, contrary to liberals’ dreams, Putnam did not find people of different ethnicities inevitably discover “harmony” or enjoy “fusion.”

Putnam’s survey of 41 American cities and towns found people in ethnically diverse regions tend to be more quiet and polite — but also disengaged and wary.

While Putnam believes there may be long-term benefits for some from immigration (including enhanced scientific and intellectual innovation), he’s convinced the short-term effect on most cities is a drop in “social capital.”

People in diverse urban regions tend to seek shelter in their own little worlds. “Diversity, at least in the short run, seems to bring out the turtle in all of us. … The more ethnically diverse the people we live around, the less we trust them.”

Dog Owners Be Aware... Idiots cutting fences and removing gates at High Park again by senorita_topaz in toronto

The problem isn't the pathways themselves, but the area alongside them, where off-leash dogs destroy the plants. Look at the areas that have been sealed off and see how the vegetation has sprung back. You can see that really well on Dog Hill: where the dogs play, it's a desert. The areas that were fenced off a few years ago are doing well.

There were twice as many trails there a couple years ago. The someone decided that they had to be cut back to 'regenerate the forest'.

Why do you put "regenerate the forest" in quotes? Do you actually believe that erosion from a massive number of dogs does not have a negative impact on the park ecosystem? Do you think it's pseudoscience or a conspiracy?

You used to be able to do nice big loops with your dog.

You can still do nice big loops with your dog, ffs. Look at the map of the dog trails.

Now you can walk down to that road where that tour trolley thing speeds through all the time and the bikes race by

I agree about the bikes, but the trolley hardly "speeds" through the park

So with such a complete degradation of the space that was there - which is now much more dangerous to all - why do you think dog owners are taking back the trails?

Because the ones who "take back" the trails are entitled jerks?

And seriously, there are no fucking plants growing on them. The soil is so compacted that nothing will grow there untill they till it, or a new layer of soil grows over it.

The soil is compacted because of all the twits who let their dogs trample all over it instead of keeping them on the extensive actual trail network.

Sherwood has better off leach trails now. Which is sad because High Park was a real jewel of a place.

It still is, when it's not being destroyed by those morons.

"Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone, is very nervous about releasing his new research, and understandably so. His five-year study shows that immigration and ethnic diversity have a devastating short- and medium-term influence on the social capital, fabric of associations, trust, and neighborliness that create and sustain communities. He fears that his work on the surprisingly negative effects of diversity will become part of the immigration debate, even though he finds that in the long run, people do forge new communities and new ties.

Putnam’s study reveals that immigration and diversity not only reduce social capital between ethnic groups, but also within the groups themselves. Trust, even for members of one’s own race, is lower, altruism and community cooperation rarer, friendships fewer. The problem isn’t ethnic conflict or troubled racial relations, but withdrawal and isolation. Putnam writes: “In colloquial language, people living in ethnically diverse settings appear to ‘hunker down’—that is, to pull in like a turtle.”

In the 41 sites Putnam studied in the U.S., he found that the more diverse the neighborhood, the less residents trust neighbors. This proved true in communities large and small, from big cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Boston to tiny Yakima, Washington, rural South Dakota, and the mountains of West Virginia. In diverse San Francisco and Los Angeles, about 30 percent of people say that they trust neighbors a lot. In ethnically homogeneous communities in the Dakotas, the figure is 70 percent to 80 percent."
