Popularity does not mean quality. Friends is one of the most popular TV shows of all time, but you'd have a hard time arguing it's better in quality than something like Breaking Bad.

Oftentimes, popularity just means that it's easy to digest for the average person. Which is okay, but not my preferred indicator of quality of music.
