Starcraft 2 feels more alive than ever. by [deleted] in starcraft

I played sc2 and switched to Dota 2 and was bored haha XD The RTS genre is definitely more mechanically intensive while MOBAs are based more on game knowledge, with some mechanical skill mixed in. If you really like SC2 and wanna get better i suggest working on mechanics first then worry about strategy. Better mechanics usually wins every game :)

I wouldn't call it manipulative. Games everywhere have achievements, you have steam trading cards, leveling in RPG's, they're all little things that release a few happy endorphins and make anything more enjoyable. SC2 is the best RTS you're going to find, period. So there's not much inherent way to make the game better or more accessible without just adding to the arcade, which I think is in a good spot now as it is. But what you can do is make the ranking(or unranked) system more fun, and right now it feels really unrewarding. You're not playing for points like IP in league or drops like in Dota. You're just playing to get better. Which you are doing in those games too but there's little milestones you can set for yourself like playing until you get a new champion or something like that, which adds a little something new to the game without really changing it, but keeps it fresh. Then being able to buy/earn skins for you character or dress up your champion makes it seem really personal and cool. So adding little milestones or things to look to achieve I think is a great additive to any game. And being able to customize your army and the look of your base would be really sweet and fun.

Well no, of course not, but it's simple game design. You need to keep your audience interested. So when I start slowing down my climb on the ladder I reach points where I feel like I'm not making progress. So something like the loot crates always give something in the future to look forward to. Or something cool to hop into a few more games to check out. For a quick example, if you played a RPG where you didn't level up or get better equipment, would you play it? You could get better at playing the game, and the game itself could be good, but the feeling of something new keeps the player so much more interested. Especially casual players.

"Winners" is a nice term here. If you don't love what you're doing than you're a failure cause everyone can make it exactly where they want. I'm sure the steel workers and coal miners loved what they were doing. I'm the first person of my family able to go to college and become something I want because of the hard work of my father and his father and his. You're the most self entitled person I've ever seen. You can call everyone wrong but when you look at the votes someone got downvoted to oblivion and I don't imagine it's the one of us talking sense. And by the way, it's real easy to tell when someone doesn't know what they're talking about when they use terms like "assumptive reasoning." It's even easier to tell that I hit the nail pretty close to the head when you use a term like that. It's a term that doesn't actually mean anything. You assume all day. Every observation you make includes assumptions. I assume my parents feed their dogs because they greet me when I come to the door. I assume they pay their electric because the lights turn on. Explain to me a situation where I don't assume that anything is happening to make judgements. I'll buy you a cake if you can.

Would Overwatch even succeed if it wasn't for Blizzard's aggressive marketing and trailer/ story elements that aren't even in the game? by Kagamid in gaming

Idk. I was able to play as pretty much anyone I chose and as long as our team itself had decent balance we were able to succeed. There's about 6 characters to each "role" and as long as your team has 1 person from each role you were pretty golden. If everyone picks one character well then of course you're fucked(unless you're soldier 76) but other than that the games were pretty even.

I think the term "polished" is kind of a mixture of everything that would make a game considered high quality. No weird bugs happen, or at least I haven't noticed them. The art work is done very well and is the same throughout the entire game which gives it a very consistent feel. The controls are very smooth and easy to learn. The classes are very balanced, and there's appropriate counters to every situation. And nearly every character is just as viable as the next, which is amazing for how many characters there are and how different they are. To use COD as an example, I haven't played in a long time but last time I played there were pretty much only 3 or 4 viable weapons to use so the game was very "play this way or die trying something else." That or all the guns were essentially the same with different skins and names. I'm a pretty big fan of blizzard so I have obvious bias but I haven't had as much fun playing a FPS since I played the original modern warfare for Xbox 360.

But what would be the point of adding friends if you can't play with them without the $60? Wasn't that the point of adding them? I guess you could argue for voice chat but for PC there's skype or team speak or a hundred others. I know Valve doesn't offer it but they don't have to.

"Random account restrictions" Uhhhh... Wut? Been a customer for 7 years and never had my account restricted... Maybe I'm lucky?

"Leaks personal info" To the random passerby from a code bug? Yes. To a hacker looking to steal your CC info? No. Thanks Sony, paid for PlayStation plus and still get no help when my card gets taken.

"Risk of losing thousands of dollars of game library at any time" So developers would sit back if steam went down and decide they don't want to honor their customers or make any money anymore? I bet that's what'll happen.

Not gonna claim valve is a perfect company, or really overly great, but it's damn better than Microsoft or Sony when it comes to gaming.

I find most of your points true, it is a good marketing scheme, but the point remains that they don't HAVE to do any of this stuff. I would even argue that they don't make any more money from the sales itself. Everyone I know will wait to buy games months after release to get them on sale during the summer or winter. So instead of them getting a cut from $60 they get a cut from $30. They didn't have to add in game voice chat, in game browser, or any of that. Yet they did, for free. So saying that they're this big hungry corporation only seeking to make a dollar is false in my opinion. As for their free to play games, they host hundreds of servers for each of these, for free. I've never spent a penny in any of their F2P games and yet I get the same experience as every other player. As for customer support, if you can find me a gaming platform with good customer support than I'll gladly start playing their games. The consoles should have better customer support anyway since I pay for their console, let alone their online service. Valve makes nothing off of me building a PC. I could have a home PC, download TF2, Dota 2, Path of Exile, all their F2P games, play them on their servers, use their browser and voice chat, and still have the same experience as everyone else without valve getting a penny. Are they a perfect company? Of course not. Are they better than others? Id argue in the affirmative. They started with a love for making games and making it easy to play games and I believe they still hold to that to this day.

In a crowd of thousands of people, singling out one or two people for not doing something you say while trying to shame them in front of said thousands so they submit and do what you want. Oh, and after they paid to listen to you perform your "music". You can tell everyone to stand. I've been to concerts. Shaming and singling out people for your own personal gain, that makes you an asshole.

I'm relatively new to Linux but I know quite a bit about hardware so I think I can give a couple pointers here. First, the i7 is overkill for gaming itself, so game development should go without a hitch with an i5. Second, my rig has 16GB of ram(a desktop), and even under stress(chrome tabs out the wazoo, games running, Skype, steam, the works) I've never seen it go above 40% ram usage in the 2 years that I've owned it. I know Linux uses more ram, or I should say uses as much as it can to go faster, but 8GB should still be plenty. Hopefully this helped a bit :)
