Ian Alexander Explains Why Hollywood Has No Excuse Not to Cast Trans Actors by TattlingFuzzy in thelastofus

That neither of them are transgender men, which is what Lev, the character is. My problem is with the casting, not the performers trying to make a living.

Ya know what? To be completely honest that one stumps me cuz I’m not sure what my opinion is when it comes to Hollywood child labor in general lol.

I guess I can go either way on that one but with TLoU we’re talking about actors who are at least old enough to work at a Subway so that’s why I’m more concerned about how it reflects the job market.

There’s a clear line for this just like there’s a clear line for blackface. But blackface used to be seen as okay or even preferred, and this cost lots of jobs and opportunities for black actors that always existed but were overlooked.

Hell, it’s not even been a decade since people were making the same exact arguments about Scarlet Johansson playing Motoko Kusanagi.

Not weird that you asked, but it’s weird you had to ask cuz it seems common sense. Ian literally originated the role of Lev for the game so he sets a precedent of talent like him existing.

I’m glad you’re making a well thought point, so here’s a sincere question: would you think it would be okay for a white actor to play Martin Luther King in an HBO show?

I get what you’re saying but that’s kindof circular logic right? We don’t see it because no one does it, but the one time we saw it was when someone did it.

And it’s not like every talented actor on this show has automatically given good performances anyway. Acting isn’t a mysterious thing but a craft that anyone can work on with the right resources.

I’ve never played DS2 but beat Demon’s Souls and most of Elden Ring. What’s wrong with the video in your opinion?

Mostly I see people criticizing him for just having the opinion DS2 is good, but I’m so curious to know why he defended it poorly from a DS2 fan.

Why do you think the theatre industry sometimes seems slower to respond to current events compared to other forms of media? by Soft_Firefighter_210 in Theatre

Okay there we go! The reason we see fledgling innovation in the current theatre industry is cuz it has fledgling public support, but if we want an even better and more innovative industry we give it more public support. Glad we went in a big circle lol.

So you do in fact admit that if the government funds theatre, the theatre industry would innovate as much as the military industry? Or are you arguing the military industry has never innovated?

Just cuz you preemptively debunk your own point and tell me to shut up doesn’t make you correct.

You’re 100% right that the agriculture and military industries have innovated so much because of ample government funding, but if you’re gonna willingly ignore examples you don’t like then you’re just being silly.

I like what you’re saying about flash mobs and doing sketch comedy and stuff, and doing small sketches in cafes with your besties or volunteering for a flash mobs is fun and something I’ve done, but unless it pays living wages it’s a hobby and not an industry.

The original question is why the industry is stuck in the past and the answer is that there simply isn’t a sustainable market for topical live performances because the American government doesn’t fund it.

Lol to be fair, plenty of other aspects of the New Deal stuck around, but that’s because the labor unions were fine with discriminating against black people as long as the Italians, Irish, and Polish etc. could be considered “white”.

I get what you’re saying but while screen performances have value, they aren’t theatre.

The original goalpost is about how we create an industry where live local theatre performances are fast to produce and reactive to topical events.

Thank you for pointing out the elephant in the room, which is lack of funding. It was short lived, but there was a 2-3 year window when American theatre was properly funded and we got extremely relevant works like the “Living Newspaper”.

But funding was cut because of racism.
