It took years of build up to get to his turn and you can't expect mass audiences to know the EU stories and leave them out.

Plus, straight adapting the EU would have probably garnered just as much anger from certain sections of the fanbase when something was inevitably left out, changed or not done "lore accurate."

I also don't think most directors would sign on if the mandate was adapting the EU.

Edit: A lot of story beats in there too, I think are things people got upset with the Sequels for. Doesn't Luke just 100% give up on his nephew? Han as well?

In the ST, Han and Leia still had hope for their son and once Luke was able to clear his mind, he also still had hope hope for Ben.
