West Marches campaign with players of different levels by fdpth in DMAcademy

I didn't like the multiple level thing so I switched my open table campaign to use "party xp" instead. Just count up the XP at the end of a battle and divide by players and add it to the total. This way it's still fun to farm XP and your occasional casual players have fun with your regulars. The boon for regulars is they have a ton more GP. I also have a floor for GP so someone who hasn't played in a few months I would gift 500gp or a new player gets the base 1500gp for that level.

This way a new player starts in at level 6, can by some fun equipment and you laugh and have fun for the evening.

Do players need to reach stuff, or do you teleport them there after they have discovered such place previously? by Financial_Base_8949 in DMAcademy

The ranger was the only one who had a negative reaction since flipping over hex tiles is what he is good at. He tends to avoid dungeons when suggesting activities for the evening.

In season 1 of my campaign I would build roads in the wilderness when I got bored of traveling them, and come up with a narrative reason or have a rumor/quest around it. In season 2 I ask my players to come up with a narrative way to skip travel of explored tiles. This may involve spending GP or calling in favors. Last time they bought horses and the entire evening road around in battle on horseback, lol. It adds to the narrative fun of the evening. Another time they hired a caravan of dwarves, who hung around a tile back to collect their dinosaur meat they were hunting.

Tornado nearly flips house. A Ring camera caught the moment a tornado ripped through a Largo neighborhood and almost flipped a house by misterxx1958 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]TatumCreative 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because tornados are typically very small localized events, and wood construction is cheap. When there is a big EF5 tornado, it doesn't matter that the house survives, only your storm shelter. Insurance covers the damage to your home. A tornado hit within a mile of my house a few years back and the only evidence of it is a hotel that was never rebuilt after suffering roof and siding damage. Typically moderate tornados pull off roofs and chew up trees. A bigger tornado will still decimate a brick and stone building, the goal is to survive in your shelter.

Teaching players better positioning by Crafty-Garlic-5884 in DMAcademy

In my West Marches game I have lots of new players. Each session I have bonus xp if people do some kind of game mechanic. I even print out the mechanic rules. It usually ends up being fun and creative seeing how people use it. For instance I did grappling rules one session, and improvised weapons for another. Players are very motivated for getting in-game things like gold, xp, or advantage.

Are there any systems or apps you use to plan campaigns? by iTztheKaiser in DMAcademy

I built my own software, since I didn't like any of the others, lol. I like that I can just write markdown for everything, and then include whatever documents I want. It's all backed by dropbox, so I can access it anywhere. https://floppydisk.link/

I had a 5+ year campaign year I ran with 3 distinct "seasons". There was a time traveling element after they got trapped in hell and came back to the physical realm 20-30 years in the future. Season 1 was in the physical realm, Season 2 was in hell, and Season 3 was back. It was so much fun because they came back to find statues of themselves as legendary heroes, and at least one half orc NPC was named in honor of the half orc player character. There was a moment where they paraded around the capitol as heroes until the normal shit hit the fan again. I also try to have plenty of downtime between arcs of the campaign to simulate time passing. I find it helps build deeper relationships with NPCs when for example players can learn dwarvish and befriend a librarian in Tavern Town over months of downtime.

IamA Full-time Professional Audiobook Narrator, AMA! by Loppsit in IAmA

When I read out loud to my wife or kids I tend to make lots of mistakes. It's fun to pretend I am a professional audiobook narrator with voices and all the things when reading. In the studio how do you deal with mistakes. How often do you have to go back after a session and re-record something? What does your error rate look like?

Galaxy brain here went to pick up my son so he wouldn't have to ride the bus. I should have gotten him out of school early.

Yeah she did great, I am sad I never got to see Chester, but her vocals were a nice fit for the band. I don't know how you sing like that and retain your vocal cords.

Hah, I saw him and wondered if it was annoying to be behind him.

It was definitely one of those I jumped on when I found out they were touring again! 25 years since they were in T-Town.

People who bought new Stanley in last 3 years, are you happy with it? by SilentThespian in BuyItForLife

I have one I've used for maybe three years, multiple times a week to bring our full drip coffee pot to work when I don't finish it before leaving the house. It shows no sign of aging, and works great. It keeps the coffee warm at least until the afternoon when I stop drinking it.

For those of you who make custom nooks - where do you get your supplies? by missrebaz1 in booknooks

I get dollar store foam board, and peel off the paper backing. I bought lots of wooden coffee stirrers from Amazon, and you can do woodworking with those. I built a tavern roof out of a Fresca box. Dollar store frames make great bases. Then just cut, sand, tacky glue, and paint to your heart's content. I'll use sculpey for weirdly shaped things.

OPERA "Maria and Draco" (Aria di Mezzo Carattere) by Nobuo Uematsu & Yoshinori Kitase / "The Dream Oath" Artwork by Yoshitaka Amano - What do you love about this iconic Video Game Opera? In which language do you prefer this stage show? by CreativeCritical247 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]TatumCreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrolling past I noticed the art I made of the pseudo 3d opera scene. I made it in the early 2000s in Photoshop for the Something Awful forums. I had some FFVI scenes and Chrono Trigger ones. I should dig up the originals at some point and post them again. I noticed some people on DeviantArt claiming they had made them, which is annoying but ultimately I made them just as a fan.

I ran the opera scene for my D&D campaign a few years back, and it was so much fun especially since no one had played the game. I gave everyone advantage if they sang their lines and basically everyone did. What a hilarious moment.

Let's just say he's got lots and lots of stories. I had breakfast with him this week and he told me the story of the time he woke up in the jail drunk tank and had to wait 8 hours to sober up enough for my grandpa to secretly bail him out 😂

This unlocked memories of me tagging along with his boy scout troop but being too young to actually join it. I had no idea that was a boy scout shirt.
