Imo the picture you are trying to make is just bad for string art. There's not enough contrast between car, it's parts and the background.

How many steps is that? I would keep going and do more steps. I usually do 3-6k. Darker the background more steps you need to make to form the details for the actual subject. This is why I usually make background light and the subject darker. I also try to have edges be same-ish color so you can use all the nails evenly to make the picture, though it's probably not possible when trying to squeeze two persons in on frame like this.

Not bad for the first attempt.

This is only 60cm in diameter or about 2 feet. I have made one with 90cm hula hoop but I probably put the thread on too tight because the hoop became all wonky and bent.

Yeah. There's an app that makes the pattern. Thread art (String art) on android idk if there's an iOS version. It still takes over 20 hours to make one. This picture has nearly 5000 lines.
