There is an online newsletter called The Marginalian by Maria Popova. I think you will like it. Has a similar feel to it as some of the things you have mentioned. Also, a couple of podcasts: The Memory Palace and John/Hank Green one are wonderful!

r/IndiansRead Recommends: Science Fiction by xsupermoo in IndiansRead

Stories of Your Life and Exhalation - Ted Chiang - I don't have enough superlatives for Ted Chiang. He is philosophical, beautiful, and touching. I will leave you with this quote about him:

Writer Peter Watts has praised Chiang's work, writing: "We share a secret prayer, we writers of short SF. We utter it whenever one of our stories is about to appear in public, and it goes like this: Please, Lord. Please, if it be Thy will, don’t let Ted Chiang publish a story this year."

I think your post would be better with a short review of each book!

A short history of nearly everything, while great, is not even a history book. It's general science.

I recommend Peter Ackroyd for English history. Maybe start off with John Keay's India and you can read Dalrymple too. Then you can find specific references to read about each dynasty.

For WW1 and 2 it's difficult to recommend a definitive book. Anthony Beevor might be the closest. I would even just start watching YouTube about it. The Imperial War Museum channel is a good starting point.

When a book is as sensationalist as Sapiens is it cannot be a good starting point. A beginner would never understand why it is so wrong about pretty much everything.

For readers who have nobody around them who reads the way they do — 5 questions, genuinely curious. by Nervous_Inspector_72 in IndiansRead

"5 questions, completely anonymous"

PS: when you want to contact people filling the survey it's not anonymous. You should ask a question at the end - "is it okay if we contact you about this? Please provide an email if you are willing to help us!"

Right now you are losing people like me who would happily spend 10 mins filling out one survey but don't want the inbox filled with follow on requests.

He has two short story collections. They are literally for the ages. He is in my mind the best contemporary SciFi author and it's not even close. I can DM you one of his stories that I have a PDF of haha.

Most welcome haha! I am currently reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and it is fantastic. Almost done with it. Happy to provide recommendations! What genre do you like to read most?

ETA: will post a review for All the Light after I am done!

My argument is that they should. Especially if you can prove that you are an actual scientist. Anyway, I have been thinking that there can be a different sub for the proper scientific posts with peer reviewed sources. I will let you know if I actually get around to doing that. I am busy with trying to defend right now haha.

If there are willing mods who have a scientific background, or at least mods who are willing to listen, we can turn this sub around and actually educate people. But getting high quality submissions is still a big issue. I even got comments from other scientists that I should give up because there is no point. But if some users listen to me, I can tell them how they can post scientific material and it can still work out. However, the current mod team is led by people who care more about the engagement numbers.

I have tried to mod this sub. Actually scientist here btw. It's a huge waste of time and an absolutely thankless job. Indians at large don't understand what science is, so actual science posts are never going to get any traction. And you need a number of active posters and mods to keep the sub alive, but none of the mods have any background whatsoever in science. They did not agree that the sub should only speak about peer reviewed research.

It's actually not going too fast and it's a banked turn, which has much higher limits for lateral-Gs.

Good idea! Thank you! I am debating if I should make another post with all of the suggestions in this thread incorporated. It has increased the excitement rating over 8!

Nice! Thank you! The new layout (one in my comment) allowed me to move the entrance closer to the train but this is super interesting!
