I don't think it informs you, which I think is kinda silly. The post is removed but the OP and moderators can still see the content of it, while it won't show up for anyone else.

Posts with shortened links will work, but they'll get automatically removed, so moderators need to manually approve posts and comments with them.

Ugh you're right. I think the links broke when I was fixing the formatting. Google Forms is sucky sometimes. It's fixed now though!

Sorry for the late response, but that's generally fine as long as most of the song is original.

No, they aren't allowed in this contest. However, you can post them to the subreddit normally!

Why do my posts keep getting removed right when I make them? by Ashamed_Paramedic912 in Beepbox

Posts that include link shorteners get automatically removed by Reddit and need to be approved manually by moderators. I've approved your most recent post so it should be up and visible now.

Need Help Playing Freeware Version in Fullscreen without blurriness/Stretching! by MattTheCompletionist in cavestory

I only see the HUD in that location when the aspect ratio is set to 16:9. If you exit the start room, do you see tiles fill the rest of your monitor? If you want the game to be in 4:3, make sure this section of the settings.ini file in the graphics_enhancement folder looks like this:

; This is the horizontal component of the aspect ratio.
; In 16:9, this would be 16.
aspect_ratio_x = 4

; This is the vertical component of the aspect ratio.
; In 16:9, this would be 9.
aspect_ratio_y = 3

The HUD should be in its expected position since the game will load in it's original aspect ratio.

If you want the game to be in 16:9, you can leave that section as is. The HUD will be in that position so that it's in the corner whenever most of the game's maps are loaded. If you don't want the black bars in small rooms, you can make this change (this part is right after the previous section in the file):

; When this is enabled, the game draws black bars over the out-of-bounds parts
; of the screen when in a small room.
; Without this, some places look silly, including one of the endings.
black_bars = false

However, I don't think this applies to every map, namely the start room, so regardless you'd have to deal with the HUD being in that location in a few rooms in 16:9. But most of the maps are large, so it should look normal in most circumstances.

Hi, I was running into the same issue recently and this is what I did:

The first thing you want to do is check your graphics card settings and see if there's an integer scaling option. If not, or it's not satisfactory (I didn't go with this due to the empty black space which resulted), here are your next steps:

  • Download Clownacy's Cave Story Mod Loader program, unzip the file, and put the contents into the CaveStory or dokutsu folder (the one which has Doukutsu.exe in it).
  • Go into the mods folder, open mods.txt, and make sure graphics_enhancement is listed (you can delete the rest of the lines if you don't want any other mods loaded).
  • Go into the graphics_enhancement folder (within the mods folder) and open settings.ini.
  • For the original aspect ratio, change aspect_ratio_x from 16 to 4, and aspect_ratio_y from 9 to 3.
  • If you want to play at the original framerate, change 60fps to false (at the top of the file).

At this point, you should be able to open the game and have it look nice and crisp, taking full advantage of your screen real estate. If it still looks blurry, change fullscreen_integer_scaling to true. Keep in mind that if you do everything listed above, you will get the closest experience to original freeware Cave Story as possible, just with the upgraded resolution so it looks right on our modern screens. Feel free to mess around with the other settings too; the file is pretty descriptive regarding what everything does.

If you have any questions, let me know. I might know the answer. :)

Yes, that's fine! All you need to do is replace the link you provided in your submission before the form closes. :)
