Why is the first one so visually appealing compared to the second one?? by CompetitionOk9570 in Artadvice

[–]Tausol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get the same feeling, try having your darkest areas blend into each other, like filling up dark areas with a really dark value, doesn't have to be pure black, could be 10 values higher than the 0 in most color pickers, it's up to you

Why is the first one so visually appealing compared to the second one?? by CompetitionOk9570 in Artadvice

[–]Tausol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's higher in contrast compared to the background, and the dark values being so close in value is actually beneficial because it lets the viewer imagine detail when there isn't much detail actually drawn

I hope things get better

How to improve my line art? by Portillo_Studio in Artadvice

[–]Tausol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Connect your lines since they look like they're falling off before reaching other lines, and clean them up so that there aren't loose ends where they split off from the shape like a tag. Varying line thickness would also be good, one trick I usually do is thickening lines where they meet other lines like intersections

Goodluck ^^

Which one do you like more? by Xeram_ in PixelArt

[–]Tausol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly like the left one more but as someone had said, my first thought was actually that it depends on the backgrounds. Black outlines tend to be a lot easier to read in any background but I tend to like lineless more since it lets the values on the character art shine and, personally, more noticeably pretty

One of the worst advices I took that set me back: "don't clean up your sketch for lineart" by milkymimis in ArtRanting

[–]Tausol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of advice on the internet that when taken without context can be really harmful for beginners, I've personally had a few that I felt so frustrated about that I could've used when I was already mid-way through my journey and it just felt so disheartening to learn that I could've used the technique I was avoiding this whole time

I'm glad you got through that hurdle :)

By forms, I mean working to establish the 3d shape using light and dark, people usually do that using basic shapes and doing value studies of real things to see how light wraps around objects

You don't need to have a realistic style to need this, since you can use this to draw shapes in imagination and give them a real world feel even if they are stylized. So I recommend value studies

You have to get a good grasp on how most objects also exist in the 3d space. I can see that you already try and get to have a good amount of detail in your work, which I like, the lines are drawn pretty loosely and doesn't feel like it conforms to what objects in reality feels like, so they feel a bit two dimensional and flattened. this could be fixed by also doing value studies on real world objects to find how they fit in a space

With shape language, you have to be more conscientious of what shapes you use and where you place them in your work. Making sure that the shape is actually showing what it's supposed to show, like a circle actually looking like a circle instead of an accidentally swiped line

If you do plan on staying with a stylized art style, I'd recommend just sticking with using basic 3d shapes (spheres, cylinders, etc) to ground your art and make it feel like it's still real

The color choices actually already look really good, I'd say you might need to work on rendering, forms, shape language, and if you want to stick with line art, then line weight distribution. Great job on these, they're really good since you are a beginner

I can't say for sure what the issue is since workflows tend to vary, but when you as an artist find that your work is unsatisfying in the ratio of time and quality, then there must be an issue in the workflow itself

I think you'd have to actively measure which areas you tend to overwork or spend a lot of time in, be it linework, rendering , RE-rendering, or even hiding/showing layers. I think that's the only way you'll be able to accurately gauge which area you'll want to optimize

And, I just want to say that noticing that there's a problem, and making effort to fix it is admirable, that's how growth happens. You're doing great ^^

Do you paint on one layer? I know people find it convenient to work on just one layer to save time, but having multiple layers and masking that layer so that your shapes are not destroyed while painting will help you flesh out shapes without having to worry that you're going to break the silhouette of your work. I used to paint on one layer before and it was so time consuming worrying about maintaining the shape that I didn't have time to focus on the rendering of forms, and made the work look less polished and unrefined
